Actually, all of them had musical experience just not with the instrument they ended up playing! For instance, Davey Jones really could play the drums but he was so small the producers didn't think anyone would see him back there so they put him up front as a vocalist.

Like it has been said on this thread, the only other surviving member of the group left is the other mike, Mickey Dolenz.
