Michael Tilson Thomas died yesterday at the age of 81. He was a world renown musical prodigy and conductor who has appeared on TV and conducted leading symphonies all around the world. I first became aware of him in 1974 when I bought the pivotal, historic rock-orchestral album, 'Apocalypse' where the Mahavishnu Orchestra newly reformed with new band members from a band he met close to home in Jamaica Queens (a member of which later went on to manage Whitney Houston) joined him to reform the band along with Frank Zappa alumni and classically trained violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, after the original band with Billy Cobham and Jan Hammer all broke up over differences of aim and direction. 'Apocalypse' was a sweeping combination of rock, flaming jazz fusion combined with the gigantic, graceful, sweeping sound of the London Symphony Orchestra in what was combined to be an historic album where both rock band and orchestra were joined seamlessly into one gigantic sound never to be repeated or equaled again to my knowledge, and which changed my life. RIP, Michael, loved your work.
