Residents of California City Set to Get Monthly $500 Stipend

Stockton, California will become the first city in the country to participate in a test of Universal Basic Income, in which 100 residents will be given $500-dollars-a-month, with no strings attached.

OMFG you can't make this s***t up!! This state will go broke before they can't even blink!!
Taxes will pay for it, yet everyone is leaving, but wiat now there will be didiot flodding into the state thinking they can live off it OMFG the irony

At least the program will be paid for by a charity. I wonder what the test is supposed to determine? If poor people like free money? Duh I'll take obvious conclusions for $400 Alex.

I would imagine it would be testing the viability of a basic living stipend. I'm not sure how much can be determined with such a small scale test, but maybe those who are running the program are hoping the residents will use it to help improve their lives, which in the end could be good for the economy. :dunno:

Yo, give it to the Homeless People Dumb-Asses, it might do some good, you think!!!!!

One city- trying an experiment with 100 people- that they aren't paying for.

The stipends will be privately funded by $1 million from The Economic Security Project — a philanthropic group co-chaired by Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes — and other donations.

Clearly this will ruin the lives of every Californian.

I mean a state that just gives its residents free money is crazy....
The Only State Where Everyone Gets Free Money
This year, Alaska will give each of its residents over $2,000 in cash, no questions asked.

Not the state's money, so STFU

If everyone were given $500.00 as their starting point, then after a while $500.00 would be zero.

Isn't $500/month in California essentially 0 already? Does that even cover ... food there?

If $500 a month isn't enough for food for an individual....ugh. That's a crazy cost of living. :p Maybe it wouldn't be enough for a family, though? :dunno:

you can't give people a will do to more.

long ago i found much value in the "give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him to fish, he eats for life" mantra and it's so very true. give people what they need their desire to do it themselves will go down.

That’s why socialism fails. It removes incentive.

Well I don't know if it is or not. (I live in Alaska which has a high COL, but I think CA is higher anymore)

My husband and I, plus our 19 year old son, eat for about 500-600 a month, but I don't really eat so really don't count me (literally $1 a day and I'm good) we all eat at home and shop at Costco because we have a house with ample food storage. Poor folks who need such a stipend are not likely to have a Costco membership (over $100/y? I think... don't pay attention) are they? Even if they could afford it would they have means to store it? (holy shit are apartment kitchens small lol) They also tend to not be eating well (aka eating out too much) as I've heard.

Naaah, this is good. We get to see a real world experiment paid for by a private entity. I just hope they release their raw data so that we can all see how it works.

That is a portion of the oil sales that Alaska collects.

And?

Free money to citizens- not from taxes.

Alaska- and these 100 people in Stockton.

It may not work at all, but since it's apparently being funded privately, I don't think it's a big deal if the people involved want to try. :)

Personally I think that there is a good chance this will turn out badly.

Not like say that the residents suddenly become criminals or something, but in that the amount is too small and the number of residents participating is too small to represent a valid sample- and that the results won't show much but will be used as an example of how it won't work.

I am not convinced of Universal incomes but I think some research needs to be done- if the issue regarding unemployment and automation turn out to be correct- we may have a real employment issue in the future.
