In a Republic, actually
'Republican lawmakers are growing alarmed over signs that President Trump’s expanding trade war is hurting the economy, something they’re hearing from constituents at home who are struggling to adapt to Trump’s zigzagging tariff pronouncements. GOP lawmakers say they’re hearing from business owners, exporters, farmers and local leaders that Trump’s threat of steep tariffs against Canada, Mexico and Europe are chilling business sentiment in the United States.

Companies feel less confident about expanding operations and hiring new workers, given their uncertainty about the costs of imported goods and the potential loss of foreign markets over the next year. “The Canadian tariffs will definitely have a detrimental impact on the economy of Maine and on border communities in particular,” said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). “We have for example a major paper mill in Northern Maine right on the border that gets its pulp from Canada.”

“That mill alone, which is by far the biggest employer in the region, employs 510 people directly. I’ve talked to the owner of that mill, the imposition of a 25-percent tariff could be devastating,” she warned. Trump announced Thursday that he would pause 25-percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico until April 2, but Collins warned that the looming threat of high fees is having a chilling effect on her state’s economy.

“I think it freezes investment until they know exactly what the impact is going to be. So I understand the president’s desire to level the playing field, but Canada’s just not the problem in Maine,” she said, citing wood products, blueberries, lobsters and potatoes that go back-and-forth across the border as key drivers of the economy.'

Republicans have only themselves to blame, they created this monster.

If only there were some way for Congressional Republicans to check a reckless, irresponsible, and out of control president…

Trump Refuses To Rule Out Possible Recession: 'There Is A Period Of Transition'

President Donald Trump, who promised to cut the cost of groceries on his first day in office, now seems to have a much different take on high prices as he shared a column with a very blunt headline: “Shut Up About Egg Prices ― Trump Is Saving Consumers Millions.”
Trump posted a link to the Feb. 17 article, written by right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, on his Truth Social platform over the weekend

“I will immediately bring prices down starting on Day 1,” he said on Aug. 15, for example. “Starting the day I take the oath of office, I will rapidly drive prices down,” he promised later that some month.
He backed away from that last month.
“Inflation is back,” he told Fox News host Sean Hannity, but insisted it’s not his fault. “I’m only here for two and a half weeks ... I had nothing to do with it.”

August 2024: “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on Day One."

March 2025: "Shut up about egg prices."

What Trump is doing is going to crush our economy OP.
It's already starting.

There will be some short term pain, but long term success. Democrats believe we can continue kicking the can down the road and it won't ever come back to bite us. Government bloat, our trade deficits and countries taking advantage of the US has to stop. The sooner the better. It is time to pull off the band-aid. The quicker the better.

Remember, when free trade started on Reagan's watch, EVERY country except the USA protected their vital industries. Industries/jobs that are vital to their economies.

The BEST jobs for any countries industry is/are manufacturing jobs. They are worth more than any other jobs. Hospitality jobs for example. If you didn't go to school maybe you don't know this? Anyways, long story short is American manufacturing labor jobs was the highest paid in the world. So this is why WE didn't protect these industries when every other country did. We WANTED to break those unions. Send those jobs overseas.

And when I say WE I mean Republicans and American corporations.

Canada sells more to the US than it buys from us and stands to lose the most

What do we want from Canada?

Canadian's agree with Trump "I'm glad that we're getting rid of American products and supporting local businesses," Ms Russell told the BBC on Thursday. "I think it's an important thing to do."

What's bloat?

Also, what economic benefit do you believe that you will receive from cutting it?

What bloat? You think our federal government is efficient? Crazy stuff there. That is a super minority opinion.

If bloat is cut, the budget can be decreased. If the budget is lower, less revenue is required. More money can be given to service the debt and/or taxes could be even further cut. It is kind of a no brainer that cutting government bloat will ultimately help the country and its citizens in some way, unless you are suggesting that Trump and Elon are going to stash 10s of billions away in foreign bank accounts.
