Because of that, the virus was made political. Republicans like to tout the low death rate and compare it to the flu. The problem with this, of course, is that if a virus is contagious enough, the low death rate becomes significant. It’s not like the normal flu kills 1 million people in the course of two years every two years. Good luck explaining that logic.

The flu does kill a lot of people.
The Spanish Flu after WWII was estimated to have killed 500 million people.
Every year over 60,000 people die from different strains.
Every time one of the guys at work goes to Florida or Texas they bring back a strain of something that ends up giving me Bronchitis which leads to Pneumonia.
I haven't had it for the last 4 years....but every time you catch a virus it scars your lungs permanently.

They only people who know exactly what happened are the people spreading it on purpose.
