The SARS Cov-2 pathogen must infect a cell to replicate and it infects cells via ACE2 receptors on the cell membrane. Children have less ACE2 gene expression and therefore less ACE2 receptors.
Children also have much more robust innate immune systems. Two major components of the innate immune system are the thymus gland and the bone marrow. Unlike every other organ, your thymus gland is at it's largest when you are a child. And you also have comparatively more bone marrow when you are a child.
