   What Happens if Congress Votes Not to Certify an Election​

   If Congress votes not to certify an election — specifically, if it objects to the Electoral College results — the process is governed by the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022 and the Electoral Count Act of 1887.
   
   1. The objection process
   After the Electoral College votes are counted in a joint session of Congress on January 6 (or a later date set by law), members of Congress may object to a state’s slate of electors.    2. Debate and voting
