My contention is that “FBI informant” is such a vague term it’s almost meaningless without context. It doesn’t tell you what they informed on, when, or how significant that relationship even was.

Nor does being an informant magically make someone law enforcement or mean they were acting on behalf of the FBI that day.

For all we know, “FBI informant” could mean someone who gave the FBI a tip years earlier about something completely unrelated. That’s obviously not the same thing as an embedded source or active asset.

Whenever I see these broad labels thrown around without any attempt to explain what they actually mean, I start suspecting the vagueness is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
