I am Military Retired. I too --- take such incidents seriously. But I also know that one cannot look at one event in isolation of all others; particularly one that happened nearly a half Century ago.
The perpetrators of the attack on the Cole should be strung up. By the way I am a U.S. Army veteran, I take attacks on servicemen quite seriously, and that is why I despise your cavalier position on the deaths of U.S. servicemen caused by the Israelis.
It's not cavalier, it's my opinion of the matter. But thank you for serving, monte!
(COMMENT)
Like most people. I have my own impressions of what the underlying factors lead us to --- relative to the USS Liberty (AGTR-5) and the assault. Like many, I am left with a very bad taste in my mouth over the incident. I was not satisfied with the response on the political level or the outcome in the aftermath. I certainly do not hold Israel blameless. I am not without reverence on this anniversary for the 34 officers and men (+ one civilian) who died --- and hold the greatest respect for the 171 wounded in the engagement.
Having said that, many events --- no matter how dubious or questionable --- have their place in time; this one being more than a generation ago. And such events have magnitude --- the relative size in political importance and historical impact. And while we must never forget the bravery and integrity of those that were lost, we must also move-on into the future with the best of intentions. To this end, just as both the Japanese and Germans have become stance allies, political aligned and strong economic trading patterns after the
Greatest Generation every fought, those of us in the
Baby Boomers Generation have learned to accepts the past and move-on in the better interest of all concerned. The USS Liberty Event happened in the early stages of Generation "X." It is important that Generations "Y" (Rise of the Information Age/Internet/War on Terror/Iraq - last generation of the 20th Century - Echo Boom) and Generation "Z" (First Generation of the 21st Century - the New Silent Generation) accept what has been and concentrate on building a better tomorrow.
We are what we are. The challenge for tomorrow is to be better then we were. We should not strive to carry bad baggage into the future.
Most Respectfully,
R
