To be technical, that was the largest purchase of uncontested land.

Louisiana Purchase was larger, but a significant amount of that territory was "unknown", as well as contested by multiple nations. Including Spain, the UK, and even Russia. It only became larger once those other territorial claims were either abandoned or resolved.

Most not from California are likely not aware that Russia actually claimed territory as far south as San Francisco, and even had a fort at Bodega bay.
