Your language shows who you are.
People who use the r-word as a derogatory slur often display traits associated with
ableism,
low empathy, and in some cases, traits from the
"Dark Triad" (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy). Such language is frequently used to establish social dominance, enforce ingroup norms, or as an expression of personal insecurity.
Key Characteristics and Motivations:
- Ableism & Prejudiced Beliefs: They likely believe that typical abilities are superior and that disabled people are "othered" or less worthy, often using disability as a punchline.
- "Dark Triad" Traits: Studies link frequent, hostile language to narcissism (arrogance, entitlement), Machiavellianism (manipulation), and psychopathy (lack of empathy and remorse).
- Need for Dominance/Insecurity: Using such slurs can be a way to make others feel small in order to elevate themselves, or as a defensive mechanism to appear tough.
