There’s been a lot of talk about illegal versus legal gun storage according to Michigan law.


“You may be criminally and civilly liable for any harm caused by a person less than 18 years of age who lawfully gains unsupervised access to your firearm if unlawfully stored. As such, a trigger lock, gun case or other device designed to prevent unauthorized access to a firearm is strongly recommended.”

“The improper storage of a firearm at home could result in the arming of a criminal breaking into the home or the injury or death of a child who discovers the firearm and plays with it.”

The Supreme Court already ruled trigger locks unconstitutional....and likely that would also apply to mandatory storage laws..

What is "improper," storage?

If it is in your home, it is properly stored......if someone breaks in and takes the gun, that is a criminal act, and nothing to do with the gun owner....

They were told that day, that there was this picture......and given 48 hours....how do you know what they did or didn't do, or what they were thinking about as they left that office.....how soon could you get help to your kid in that situation?

Please.........they were called in to one meeting that we know of, the day the shooting happened.....hours before the shooting happened...get off of your high horse, engage your brain....

The school knew about the picture and the writing, and did not think he was an immediate and deadly threat...which is why they didn't order him off of the campus...........

So try again....think first...

They called the mother the day before about the son looking up ammo online. Which normally I’d agree is harmless but clearly the school was watching this boy closely because he was sending up red flags. They wouldn’t have called her without good reason.

And, how many times does it have to be explained that the school *did* think there was immediate danger. In addition to telling them they had had 48 hours to seek psychiatric help for him, they flat out told the parents to take him home. To get him off the premises. The parents inexplicably refused to do so and went home.

At that point the school had limited options. They should have called the police or protective services. Whichever staff member(s) allowed this kid to re-enter the general student population once the parents left are culpable as well.

The parents are responsible for not taking the kid home as well as for not sharing with the school the fact that he had access to a gun.

The school is responsible for not taking further action once the parents left and allowing him to return to class.

The school’s failures do not absolve the parents for their failures.
