Palin QUIT, as in she didn't complete the obligation she'd signed up for because she'd done something wrong, wanted to get out of it, and didn't want to give up the fame.

She QUIT. If a person quits somewhere in their obligation on their enlistment contract (what they'd signed up for) it's called being kicked out for cause because the military doesn't want them.

If they complete their obligation, they are considered to have completed their term, and can sign up for another term or leave.

There is also a program for enlisted people to become officers, it's called a promotion. If you signed up for an enlisted hitch and get selected to go to officer training? They terminate your enlisted contract and give you an officer contract.
