Slavery is a part of the American story, but to solely define us by an institution that ended a century and a half ago is ridiculous. Slavery is part of the story, by only a part. It does not define us.

The Smithsonian is an extension of democrat party philosophy. The history of what would span the United States is a lot longer than the hundred years of Smithsonian focus. The flag that flew off slave ships was the Brit Union Jack and the Portugal and Spanish flags for more than a hundred years before the Civil War. The New England industrial states made a fortune on Southern cotton plantations. When whales became scarce the New England whaling ships converted their holds to the the more lucrative slave trade. New Jersey was the last Northern state to outlaw slavery a scant 15 years before the Civil War. Blame foreign slave traders and Obama's slave trade ancestors and England and France and Portugal and Spain for slavery but don't use it to to justify the murder of Americans in the Confederate States.
