The dark underbelly of our past has never been acknowledged in the history taught in school. It has either been entirely left out or minimized.

Weird. It was most certainly in my curriculum and that was before "woke" was a thing. We also said the pledge allegiance every morning and kids were patriotic and proud of their nation. Slavery was a stain on our past for sure, but it doesn't define our country.
