The China problem is so much bigger than trade at this point. It is a geopolitical quagmire. We here on this forum don't know nearly enough to understand all the elements at play here. I doubt the Department of State has enough good information to help Trump navigate this. I wouldn't want to be in Trump's shoes and have to deal with China, the political establishment, and maybe a quarter of America that has lost their minds and are hellbent on destroying America from within.
