The Federal government shutdown has been going on for more than a week with no end in sight.
Republicans say pass the "clean CR", period.
Democrats say "put back the $1.5T of spending that was cut by the BBB, including restoring the ACA subsidies", period.

The problem is that we have too many lawyers and not enough "genius" in congress, we need "Problem Solvers", not "ideologues".

If congress was working in private industry there would be no shutdown, that wastes money, a deal would have been cut already, "one way or another".

Republicans are the majority, they need to push for a solution to end the shutdown:
1. Go nuclear and say "CRs only need 51 votes". A very wimpy solution, it just guarantees more CRs
2. Go nuclear for CRs, Appropriations, and Rescission Bills. A less wimpy solution, but it may bite them in the ass in the future.
3. Publish a proposed deal, let the MSM grade it, and dare the democrats to walk away.
Go for a "WIN-WIN Grand Bargain" that solves several of the major problems, Republicans should put these on the table:
a) Fix Social Security by raising the cap and adding 2-years to the early & full retirement ages
b) Fix Medicare (going bankrupt)
c) Give the ACA subsidy at 50% of the current Covid subsidy (half a loaf)
d) Pay for the subsidy by raising the top tax rate to 40%, Trump agrees, it helps balance the budget.
e) Appropriations Bills and CRs only need 51 votes to pass. (solves future unnecessary shutdowns)

If the democrats don't put up a suitable counter offer, just go with option #2. End the shutdown now.

Stand-off continues more than a week into the government shutdown

Trump ought to crush them. Not capitulate at all or else negotiate in such a way Democrats hang themselves even more. The guy is about five steps ahead of everybody.

The House isn't even in session.
Thune can go nuclear for the CR, but that solves nothing, democrats need to be brought to the table for serious negotiations.
The nuclear option isn't an option. It is as stupid as Harry Reid's ideas regarding the filibuster. What goes around comes around. The petulance in DC HAS TO STOP. We are not a communist country. The government's job is not subsidizing individuals. It is providing for the COMMON good. That doesn't mean they pay for your healthcare on the backs of others. This ain't rocket science and when reduced to the base elements the disagreement is who gets what for free.

As entertaining as that sounds, Trump is on the sideline for CRs, as of this minute the senate needs 60 votes to pass, and Republicans only have 55 votes. So until there are serious negotiations where Trump could be helpful, here we sit, shutdown.
I don't know why they aren't negotiating serious issues.

True, but I don't see Republicans negotiating, or making a counter offer. Both sides refuse to budge. That is irresponsible.
For the GOP to 'budge', they would have to undo their bill that passed last summer. Why would or should they do that?

The filibuster is only good for major legislation, like Voting Rights, Election Laws, etc. Routine short term Bills, like confirmation of personnel, or budgets, or CRs, or rescission packages should be by simple majority to keep things moving. Shutdowns are a waste of time and money when we need major problems solved.

THERE HAVE BEEN NO CUTS. This is premature, smoke and mirrors BS. Please link to this cut---when did it happen?
The BBB cut about $1.5T off Biden's last budget. google it.
FACT: Of course, the $1.7 trillion savings is partly offset by one-time spending on border security and additional tax cuts (NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME) — which brings the net deficit reduction to exactly $1.407 trillion.

The revenue loss would be partially offset by nearly $1.3 trillion in reduced federal spending elsewhere, namely through Medicaid and food assistance.

Democrats Move to Reverse $1 Trillion Medicaid Cuts

Nope. There was no counter offer by the Republicans. Mikey put up a "clean CR" and insisted that democrats pass it.
The democrats said "NO", not unless you put back the $1.5T you cut...here we sit 9-days later. No counter offer.

We both know that there would be no "wrangling" after a CR, there would be just another CR, then another CR...
I agree that the GOP is not making a counter-offer. Nor would Democrats in a similar situation.

The problem for the Democrats in all this is that it is (generally speaking) their consituents who rely on the federal government for their assistance with living if not their entire livelihood, whereas Republican consituents largely see the federal government as a bloated, money-draining behemoth that they are more than happy to do without for a few months.

IF the Republicans never use the nuclear option, they may end up offering a token compromise for one man - Senator Schumer - to save face.

I don't know if the Democratic Party establishment will allow him to accept a compromise that does not include taxfunded healthcare for illegal aliens who were given "legal status" the last administration. I don't think the Republicans will ever accept it if it does give those illegals-turned-"legal" free healthcare.

Where is the option for the Democrats to cave and slither back under the nearest rock?

You want Congress to act like adults? Cancel their pay. See how long they play stupid games when it's coming out of THEIR pockets!

The Republicans don't need a counter offer after the House passed a clean CR. The choice is for the Democrats to take it or leave it. That is their counteroffer, and is exactly as it should be?

For about the 50th time since the shutdown, you cannot cut their pay according to the Constitution. When will you retards finally get around to actually reading the damned thing?

There is no negotiation because there doesn't need to be any! The Democrats need to cave!

SMH. There is a CLEAN CR available to continue negotiations! The funding has been made. This "my way or the highway" garbage is coming from the left prematurely. They are WASTING valuable negotiating time while trying to get into the news cycle.

The Republicans "word" on agreeing to "negotiate" is highly suspect.

Remember when the OBBB was being "negotiated"? (And I paraphrase.)

"Sit down and shut up."

"There is a new sherrif in town."

"You lost, suck it butter cup."

"We don't need to negotiate."

"Elections have consequences, we won".
.
.
.
.
.
Then passed the OBBB via reconciliation with with a simple majority.

Most members of Congress are millionaires.

They could care less about missing a paycheck.

Why do you have a problem with Republicans using the Democrats own tactics?
