Democrats name their price on ending government shutdown

That's not true at all.

They trade SNAP bennies for junk food because it is more convenient to simply open a package and eat, and because they have learned to eat this way.

Beans and rice should be the staple of any low-income person's diet. They are very cheap and very nutrient dense. If bought dry by the bag, they are pennies per meal. I once worked part-time for two years, with a stay-at-home wife, so I could complete a college degree. At that time, we had four boys and a girl on the way. We ate a lot of beans and rice.

With B&R taking care of caloric needs, fiber, protein and hunger, our remaining grocery money was spent on salad veggies, heavy on the raw spinach, one of the most vitamin and mineral rich foods you can eat, tomato paste for making sauces, spices to flavor everything, and either chicken or ground beef. Oatmeal and eggs for breakfast. The only place where we didn't skimp was bread.

The main ingredients: willingness to spend the time preparing these meals, and willingness to forego the non-nutritional food that SNAP recipients are encouraged to purchase.

Are their meals that are healthy AND easy? Not as healthy as what I describe above, but much healthier than Hot Cheetoes and Hawaiian Punch. Lunchables and a variety of frozen meals come to mind. Microwaveable meals.
Did you see the breakdown I posted of how SNAP people spend the money we give them? Fully 23% of it goes to soda, prepared “convenience” foods, and prepared desserts.

I'm surprised that it is that little. I know there are people who buy far more than that, I see them when I grocery shop with my own money minus what they take out of my check to pay for their snacks.

If it were 10%, I wouldn't object to that so much. I don't want to require the beans and rice plus diet, but they should not be using tax money to buy "food" that harms themselves and their children. The system encourages them to think of it as free money so why not spend it on whatever. If they even had to work community service to get the benefits, they might respect them more.

You explained that you somehow think getting SNAP benefits means you somehow have extra food to last a month. It's the same disconnect Marie Antionette had with her famous let them eat cake comment.

Fraudulent SNAP transactions increased by 55 percent between the final quarter of fiscal year 2024 and the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service.
New York is by far the state with the most reported SNAP benefit thefts, with 151,000 claims made between 2023 and March 2025, totaling more than $80 million lost by SNAP users.
Second to the Empire State is California, with almost 86,000 claims and $38 million down the drain. In third place is Maryland, with 63,800 fraud instances and $24 million lost to criminal schemes.

In New York, law enforcement recently uncovered a $66 million criminal scheme involving a USDA employee. In Ohio, three Columbus residents were recently charged in connection with a $600,000 SNAP theft.

Republicans failed to pass a budget.
The house is working on that now. Before the Schumer shutdown for illegals subsidy, they had 3 or 4 out of 12 appropriations passed, and getting back to regular order.

Face it. This is your shutdown, you own it, and no amount of lying will save you.

Throw in some pork or chicken along with fresh vegetables and you have complete nutrition on an affordable budget

Least bought items bought with SNAP are dried beans, cooking oil and all purpose flour.
Most purchased are soda, potato chips, candy bars. Why is that?

In most cases, people who end up on SNAP and welfare for generations tend not to make responsible decisions. Selecting the best use of (limited) food money (provided by others) is one of them.

Democrats name their price on ending government shutdown

7 Nov 2025 ~~ By Stephen Neukam & Stef W. Kight

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Friday that Democrats would vote to end the government shutdown in exchange for a one-year extension of expiring ACA tax credits, multiple sources told Axios.

Commentary:
So basically, the compromise is the socialists get what they want, the republicans get bupkis. They want one year because they think they win congress back in a year where they can then ram it through and control a second shutdown.
It's a distinction without a difference. This is STILL trying to put the camel’s nose into the tent, and with the resulting dislocations later on. The place for these spending measures is in a full and real appropriations bill, not a continuing resolution.
Kicking the can down the road only further damages the can. Besides, we are running out of road.
Senator John Kennedy has the right idea.
The Senate should not be paid their monthly salaries until they vote .
If Democrats are willing to stop the government allow the military, air controller and SNAP recipients to go without, then they should also go without the salaries until they sit down and negotiate and leave hostage taking to terrorists.
WTF kind of compromise and negotiation tactic is this??? Give me everything I want for another year and then we’ll talk at that time. LOL

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5595545-schumer-plan-government-shutdown/On top of the one-year extension,

Schumer’s offer also called for short-term funding bill known as a continuing resolution (CR) and the attachment of a three-bill minibus of full-year spending bills that were a part of previous bipartisan talks.

No, not bupkis but a CR and a working and funded government for a year.

What Republicans seem to want is the Democrats to simply give them what they want in exchange for counting on their goodwill for negotiating on extending ACA tax credits but you know... without any negotiating power. Because everybody knows the GOP under Trump doesn't strongarm.

Now I say, do it. Let's see what happens and when 20 million people lose their coverage and don't get health insurance anymore let the GOP own it. In fact, that would be my condition. End the shutdown in exchange for the GOP taking full responsibility for what happens to ACA.
The GOP should take accountability for OBAMAcare failing? Priceless. LOL

Indeed, Isn't that exactly what Schumer said and did with his fellow travelers in response to the same Clean CR passed by Schumer a year ago?

I'm pretty sure it's cheaper to go to McDonalds and get junk food than get a nutrious meal so there's that.

SNAP is a subsistence level benefit, which means people will go as cheap as possible, in the US sadly enough, that means junk food more often than not.

C’mon (this is sarcasm), get with the program...the poor are getting a sweet ride. We all should strive for the luxurious lifestyle of a SNAP recepient.

You really have to wonder what sort of mental illness infects the political right in this nation. Next they’ll be telling us that slavery wasn’t so bad and blacks had it better under Jim Crow.

The clean CR offered by the Republicans in the House "expires" on November 21st. It's not really an expiration date, but it would only fund the government until midnight the 21st, so at 12:01 on the 22nd, it becomes moot.

Then what? There will be nothing to filibuster in the Senate and the House is the only chamber allowed to originate spending bills.

Predictions about what happens next?

In other words, if the GOP doesn't cave to Schumer's demands, the Dems think they can shift the blame for the continued shutdown on to the GOP.

Wanna take any bets on how many Republicans give in? :laughing0301:
I think somebody needs to knock Schumer's teeth out.

For what, something I know doesn't exist, don't thinks so.

.
Your lie exists. You made a claim, but Republicans were in Congress when the date was set. Furthermore, this shutdown is because of Repubicans. Why would they want to end a subsidy that helps people get health care? But they don't mind giving subsidies to the rich after the rich have made record profits. So you're a liar, plain, and simple.

What's the price? Making US lay out our tax dollars for set-asides, subsidies and carve outs for certain States (Like CA) that give Medi-Care dollars to illegals thorough clever accounting to Medi-Cal. The bill stinks to high heaven as is. That stuff needs to go. They're using scare tactics on American citizens who qualify for SNAP. The truth is, they let all those illegals suck off US tax dollars, there will be no SNAP or any other government support services. We need to surpass Obama's deport numbers.

Medicare does not go to illegals. Now you don't whine about giving our tax dollars to rich scumbags who don't need the money. No scare tactics are being used, and as for illegals:

On July 30, 2024, the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy released a report titled “Tax Payments by Undocumented Immigrants.” This report found that undocumented immigrants contributed nearly $100 billion in federal and state taxes in 2022 alone.
  • Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022. Most of that amount, $59.4 billion, was paid to the federal government while the remaining $37.3 billion was paid to state and local governments.
  • Undocumented immigrants paid federal, state, and local taxes of $8,889 per person in 2022. In other words, for every 1 million undocumented immigrants who reside in the country, public services receive $8.9 billion in additional tax revenue.
  • More than a third of the tax dollars paid by undocumented immigrants go toward payroll taxes dedicated to funding programs that these workers are barred from accessing. Undocumented immigrants paid $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes, $6.4 billion in Medicare taxes, and $1.8 billion in unemployment insurance taxes in 2022.
  • At the state and local levels, slightly less than half (46 percent, or $15.1 billion) of the tax payments made by undocumented immigrants are through sales and excise taxes levied on their purchases. Most other payments are made through property taxes, such as those levied on homeowners and renters (31 percent, or $10.4 billion), or through personal and business income taxes (21 percent, or $7.0 billion).
  • Six states raised more than $1 billion each in tax revenue from undocumented immigrants living within their borders. Those states are California ($8.5 billion), Texas ($4.9 billion), New York ($3.1 billion), Florida ($1.8 billion), Illinois ($1.5 billion), and New Jersey ($1.3 billion).
  • In a large majority of states (40), undocumented immigrants pay higher state and local tax rates than the top 1 percent of households living within their borders.
The rhetoric said that undocumented immigrants drain our economy, the truth says they contribute nearly 100 billion to this nation every year. The report says that if our government gave them a path to citizenship, it would add even more revenue. Racism comes with a price and the price for mass deportations now is at least 96.7 billion dollars annually. This was free money. Undocumented immigrants were paying for programs they could not get. Money for programs that anti-immigrant right wing Republicans are gladly taking advantage of.
