President Obama said Monday that he will ensure the government never "opens the door" for human cloning, before signing an order to lift restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Some critics say the stem cell research can lead to human cloning, but Obama said his administration would develop "strict guidelines" to avoid such experimentation.

"We cannot ever tolerate misuse or abuse. And we will ensure that our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction," Obama said. "It is dangerous, profoundly wrong, and has no place in our society, or any society."

Rather, Obama said he was signing the order to unlock the potential for scientists to find better treatments for ailments ranging from diabetes to Parkinson's disease to cancer.

"That potential will not reveal itself on its own. Medical miracles do not happen simply by accident. They result from painstaking and costly research," Obama said. He said the move rejects the "false choice" between science and morality.

Let's hope so, nothing worse than watching someone die from cancer, or suffer the effects of Parkinsons.

Hi Diuretic, Force, Dill:

Okay, that's funny

Actually this human cloning business is no laughing matter. Remember that cloning advocates refer to stem cells as ‘fountain of youth’ cells (story) and for more than one reason. Suppose that people begin cloning themselves for the spare parts to simply trash the empty shell. That proposal might sound good to the sick guy, but not if you happen to be the duplicate. Anyone watching this TV Series (pic = Carter is hot) knows that these guys (pic) clone themselves again and again for their consciousness to be downloaded into new bodies; which you know must be on the mind of somebody . . .

Oh, no cloning, but of course, he's okay with ABORTION.

How does THAT make sense?

Yes. There is a BIG difference between being okay with ABORTION and acknowledging the woman’s right to choose. If the woman decides that bringing her offspring into this world is a terrible idea, then you can be responsible when FORCING her to have the baby finds the child floating down the river or in a dumpster somewhere. Right now there are over 1,000,000 homeless children in the USA and counting (story), but I suppose some people would rather see 10,000,000 homeless children that nobody wants to care for and support. While I can endorse a ban on all abortions in 'my' kingdom, I am not ready to stand in the shoes of the women actually making that decision on a case-by-case basis in these United States; when 'they' are the ones who must suffer the consequences of their decisions either way. When the decision hinges on the Government right to choose and the woman's right to choose, then I will side with the woman every time . . .

Do those of us who already have cloned ourselves have to turn one one of us in ?

You are raising the question about ownership ‘or’ citizenship of the newly cloned individual. Do 'you' own the copy of yourself, OR are you giving birth to a new U.S. citizen with the same rights you have under the U.S. Constitution? Does your clone have the right to child support and the right to select a legal guardian in the event that you want to steal his heart, kidney, liver and whatever? :0)

This cloning topic represents a big can of worms and a Pandora’s Box that once opened can be very difficult to close and retain any notion of morality . . .

GL,

Terral
