Barack Obama announced the United Statess return to a policy of engagement with Asia today, but on the first leg of his nine-day tour of the continent he failed to resolve a disagreement on the future of US forces in Japan.
Mr Obama and the Japanese Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, spoke warmly of the importance of the security alliance between the two countries. But they agreed to put off settling their first important disagreement with the US, about a multibillion-dollar deal to move US marines out of Japan and to relocate a military air base.

Not that we should be there in the first place, but if they want us out of their country what right do we have to refuse to even discuss the matter with their Prime Minister? They no longer want us occupying their country so let's get out immediately and let them defend themselves.
