At the end of what it had billed as “recovery summer,” the Obama administration is offering a mixed-message response to a sputtering economy: promising to identify additional measures to boost growth while simultaneously dampening expectations for quick relief.

“I ask Republicans to drop the blockade,” the president said.

Under criticism from embattled Democrats running for reelection for not focusing enough on voters’ economic concerns, Mr. Obama said, “My economic team is hard at work identifying additional measures that could make a difference in both promoting growth and hiring in the short term and increasing our economy’s competitiveness in the long term."

The context for the remarks includes a report last week that growth has slowed to a 1.6 percent annual rate in the second quarter of the year. What's more, some private economists have said new jobless numbers, which will be released Friday, may be even worse than the current 9.5 percent national unemployment rate.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell issued a statement in response to the president’s remarks, charging that “instead of growing jobs as promised, Washington Democrats have grown the size of the national debt, the federal government, and the unemployment rate.”

Obama to GOP: Why are you blocking small business aid bill? - CSMonitor.com

Hmm--I know it's really not November yet--so that would mean that DEMOCRATS still CONTROL all 3 houses of government--meaning that Republicans couldn't BLOCK any bill-- since they are the minority. They couldn't block the 787 BILLION dollar economic stimulus bill that really wasn't, they couldn't block Obamacare--they couldn't block any bill over the last 19 months or since Obama has been in the Oval office. Does this PRESIDENT really believe that the American populace is that stupid?

Then we have to ask what this new Jobs stimulus bill aka Stim bill Jr. really is. Now after 19 months this President and congress just realised that small business in this country is really the driving force of economic activity and job growth. (So I take it that it means the road and bridge idea--didn't really work--).

Then we have to ask what exactly is it that the government is going to do for small business in this country? Possibly another Fannie/Freddie loans where we the American taxpayer will again be guaranteeing loans for "failing businesse's" in this country. Another wonderful idea--via--our Federal Government--LOL. Myself being a small business employer know--that in order for me to get a bank loan--I have to show that I am actually doing business--I have good sales--and by golly there is profit in doing my business. Normally a business has to have two years of IRS returns showing sales and profits before a bank will even look to give a loan. (So I guess that lending practice is now out the window-it will be lowering lending standards again to give small business an ARTIFICIAL boost--as we have witnessed over the last 19 months--with every other bill that has come out of this administration.

The thing that is lacking in this economy is DEMAND. When there is demand for goods and services--small business'es will expand and they will hire--and all without one single penny from the taxpayers of this country.

Of course they can block things. One of the key pivots (currently the key pivot) in American government is the Senate filibuster. If the other party is determined to 1) constantly use it, and 2) vote completely lockstep, they can block anything.

The only reason the stimulus passed is that there were Republican defectors in the Senate: Specter, Snowe, and Collins all crossed lines to vote with the Democrats. Similarly, the only reason the health care bill was possible is that Specter actually switched parties to give the Democrats 60 Senate seats for a few months. As you may or may not know, when the House and Senate pass different bills, they often go to a conference committee to sort out the details, and then the resulting conference bill goes back to each chamber for a vote. That wasn't possible with the health care bill because Scott Brown's election reduced the Democratic majority in the Senate to "only" 59 seats, meaning the House was forced to pass the Senate bill unaltered (except for a few small changes passed through a budget reconciliation bill, which is the only way to pass something with only majority support in the Senate these days).

So yes, they can block anything they like (they've blocked lots and lots of things so far). They've had a few high-profile failures due to defections on their side but that merely underscores the point.

Obama may be wrongly believing that they still teach U.S. government classes in high school. Which appears to not be the case.

The Republican Party needs to put country first and that won't happen. Their only policy that has been in effect, and has been affective, is working to make Obama fail. Every idea has been ridiculed and falsely characterized as "Socialism" or worse, and every need all of us seem to be concerned with can be fixed by the one magic bullet held by the conserviatives: Tax Cuts.

While America 'burns', the Republicans 'fiddle'; Becks rally Sunday was the most recent 'tune' ("God is Great"; hey Glen, that's been done. See Iran for how well that worked out).
Past tunes: Obama is a Muslim! He was born in the Africa! He is a Socialist! He is a Marxist! He hates white people! OMG, he played golf!
And all of these tunes are played back over and over by the Loony Tune Players on this message board.

So, what should be done? A huge influx of capital, both from the government and private investors in at least three national projects: Rebuilding the electrical grid; building inter and intra urban railroads and the building of canals for the transport of goods, recreation and flood control; and the building of health care centers in each congressional district across America providing preventative medicine and health care education.
Image the possibilities, jobs for decades, less dependence on foreign oil, and a healthier happier citizenry. The opposite of hate and fear, the only other policy the Republican Party seems to have.

Amen!

To give an idea of the good faith efforts to compromise made by the minority party, I offer my favorite illustrative example: a key moment from the Senate HELP Committee markup of their health care bill last year.

So then, how to stimulate demand? Cash for clunkers seemed successful as was the homebuyer tax credit. Any other ideas?

Cash for clunkers was successful in restricting the availability of used cars, resulting in an increase in the cost of used cars. What it succeeded at was allowing rich people to buy cars at the expense of poor people who would normally be able to buy their castoffs.

As for the home buyer tax credit. that waas successful in sustaining a housing bubble beyond the point where it would have died, and kept housing prices at an artificial high. We are now looking at a return to free market, and lower prices across the board as a result.

Anything else you want to point to as a successful example of government intervention in the economy?

Not if they do not have enough votes to prevent the majority party from overriding the filibuster, which they do not. Shame on you for spouting the tired partisan lie that the Republicans control the Senate.

I have a question. Since Beck routinely condemns Republicans, why do you insist on lumping them together? Is it a sign that your mind is to small and closed to accept anything that does not come out of the mouths of the left wing media pundits? Isn't that exactly the problem you have with the right wing?

Man what a bunch of whiners. The Democrats whined incessantly even when they had a Super Majority in Congress and a Democrat in the White House. So i think it's fair to say they're never gonna stop whining. Whining is in the Democrat DNA. This current President definitely whines more than any other President in history. At least Bush handled things like a man. He took all the hits and just kept rolling along. This guy in there now can't go a day without b*tchin & whining about something. Bush inherited a Recession from Clinton when the Internet Bubble burst but he didn't whine nearly as much as this guy does. I think most Americans are getting pretty sick of him though. One can only take a constant whiner for so long.
