Only 62.7% of adult Americans are working. The so-called Labor Force Participation rate hasn't been this low since the late 1970s. The rate measures how many people over age 16 are working or actively seeking work. Back in the '70s, it was low because fewer women worked outside the home.

Loads of folks just flat out dropped out of the job market. They couldn't find a job. And loads of jobs are part time.

Why doesn't America's 4.9% unemployment rate feel great?

I don't understand how you can write those two contradictory statements. The Labor Force Participation Rate (employed plus unemployed divided by the adult civilian noninstitutional population is indeed 62.7%, but how can you say that's the percent of Americans working when you note that it includes people not working? The Employment-Population Ratio is 59.7%

And now it's low because we have a larger percent of retirees, and school attendance. This was predicted and it's been going down for 16 years. The recession accelerated things, and did add more people who have given up (though those are now miniscule) and delayed or dissuaded many from entering the labor market, but the primary driver has been those age 55 and older. ALL of the drop in the labor force from the 2014 average to the 2015 average was from age group 55 and older.

Loads of folks just flat out dropped out of the job market. They couldn't find a job. And loads of jobs are part time.

The vast majority of people not in the labor force do not want a job now. That percent has been growing. Leaving the labor force out of discouragement has been a tiny portion....right now that's 0.6% of those not in the labor force. As for part time...that's 18.2% of employed, down from 20% in 2010.

I'm curious, Wowei...can you point out the economic policies Barack Obama put in place that got unemployment to go down? What his policies were to grow the economy?

The Fed wasn't able to raise interest rates during Obama's entire two terms because the economy was so weak that even a threat of doing so caused the stock market to plummet yet the stock market is growing so strongly since Donald Trump's election that the Fed has just announced that it will go ahead and raise interest rates for the first time in eight years. Trump hasn't even been sworn in yet but he's had a bigger positive influence on our economy than Barry had for two entire terms!

Historically an administration is always given credit for good outcomes or blamed for bad outcomes. That seems to always lead to clashes in what are the causes and effects. I'm not going to get into a pointless never ending discourse at that level.

During Obama's two terms the stock market more than doubled. Let's see how Trump does at the end of his term before jumping to cause and effect conclusions.
