I highly encourage training youngsters in martial arts, for many reasons. However when discussing teenagers trying to defend themselves from extreme violence, this IMHO involves a different mindset. It's not time to teach them Aikido, It is time to remove the kid from that place..period! Of course that does not often happen.

Had that been a white kid, this would likely be a major news event with riots in the streets.
