A family in rural Wisconsin has retained a civil rights attorney and is calling for a hate crime investigation after a
video captured a violent scene: a Black teenager being beaten by a group of young men at a party in the Town of Pulaski in western Wisconsin.
Iowa County Sheriff Michael Peterson called the video "disturbing" and said "we have no place in society for violence like that." But he said an investigation by his office determined based on witness accounts that the attack on the teenager, 14, was not racially motivated.
Now, civil rights attorney B'Ivory LaMarr, representing the family, is calling for a full investigation and for arrests to be made.
He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this was clearly a racially motivated attack and a textbook hate crime case.
“When a Black teenager is targeted, beaten, and subjected to racial epithets — that is a hate crime,” LaMarr said. “This case is about accountability, protecting children, and ensuring equal protection under the law. Anything less sends the wrong message to victims and emboldens perpetrators of hate.”
LaMarr said he plans to file a complaint with the state Department of Justice and will be advocating for the teenagers in the video to be charged under the hate crime statute.
The video, which is less than two minutes long, shows the teen being pushed and held up against farm equipment before being wrestled down to the ground by another young male.
Multiple people then jump in and start throwing punches. At least four young men are seen attacking the boy at various points. At another point, the boy is slammed to the ground.
In the muffled audio of the video, the N-word can be heard, though it's unclear who is speaking.
"F--- that n----," someone behind the camera says before accusing the boy of trying to steal guns. "So, I say f--- him," he says again.
A Wisconsin sheriff said the video is "disturbing" but that the attack was not racially motivated, which the teen's family disputes.
