Okay, but Rent Control is a terrible idea. Speaking as an Ex-landlord, no one is going to control my expenses - mortgage rates, utilities, repairs, taxes.

Rent control is NOT a terrible idea. We've had rent control in Ontario for decades. Landlords are allowed to raise the rent to the level of inflation. The increase rate is posted annually. But Landlords can apply to the Tribunal to raise rents above the level of inflation if they can prove their expenses have increased. They can also increase the rents to market levels upon vacancy.

Recent housing shortages and rent increases created a real problem post pandemic. Rents have more than doubled, and landlords are evicting tenants to get the higher rents, using provisions which allow landlord to evict tenants for reasons other than nonpayment of rent. The favourite excuse is to give a unit to a close family member. These evictions have become so common that the CONSERVATIVE government is now fining landlord the equivalent of one year's free rent to the tenant, if the landlord tries one of these fake evictions.

My landlord evicted my neighbour and she ended up dying in a homeless motel 6 months later. Your casual "let's get rid of the low rents" so I can make more money, comes at a very high cost. He tried that with me too, and knowing my rights, I went to the Tribunal and got an Order against him for trying it. That Order cost him WAY more money than he could have made legally.

As for the food depots. I don't have a lot of faith in a government store either, but I expect that they would be BETTER THAN THE NOTHING THEY HAVE NOW.

Why should I have to appeal to the government on how I run my own property?

Well, I can't speak for Canada, but I can tell you exactly why that was.

You see, what happened was that some Goo-goo (What Mayor Daley called liberals whose emotions outweighed their common sense) decided to close down the housing projects (Good) and give every poor family a voucher (bad). Which means if you are out there working for a living and trying to pay the rent, you are competing with a Section 8 family with a voucher.
