The ballot after being cast at the poll or the mail ballot after signature identification has no voter id connected to it. Once the person votes or once signature stub or envelope is removed from the mail in ballot, there is no way to connect the ballot to the actually voter. If the signature of the mail in voter has been forged or the voter at the poll has a forged id or the poll worker failed to check the id properly then once the vote is cast it becomes nearly impossible to correct the situation regardless whether the voter was voting by mail or at the polls. Once you past the id check at the polls and vote or once the mail ballot goes through signature certification and the ballot is counted there is no way to correct the situation of a illegal voter because there is no audit trail from the illegal voter to his ballot. Once the ballot is cast it can't be changed even if voter is invalid. This is the problem Trump's lawyer faced, even if they proved voter fraud at polls or mail in votes, there is no way to eliminate the invalid ballots. The good thing about or balloting system is that it's secret which is also the bad thing about it. However, most but no all states have a true secret ballot.
