I think there was a true story movie about the war in Afghanistan in which a single American soldier survived an attack and ended up in an Afghan village, some elderly Afghan man saved him. I don't know if the Afghan was brought back to America or not, but he saved his life out of religious conviction.

For some reason, this doesn't seem like the type of courage someone in Gaza would exercize if an Israeli hostage broke free from his captors.

That's a sad realization to be honest.

I think you miss the point as to why those conquests were successful.

The reason why they overran so much of the former Roman Empire is that Christians spent centuries fighting among themselves about issues such as the nature of Christ.

Same with the Parthian Empire. They had been fighting the Byzantines for so long, both empires were weakened and the people their welcomed their new masters.

Most of those countries in the region such as Syria, Iraq, Jordan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, etc. and were formed out of either the British or French mandates.

It was the remains of the fallen Ottoman Empire which ruled that entire region for 500 years, and during these 500 years the Ottoman Muslims never recognized a Palestine or a Palestinian people.
