New Zealand isn't the United States.
The AR-15 style rifles are not, repeat, not, military style assault rifles. The M-16A1 is a "military style" rifle. As to the term "assault rifle," the word assault was tacked onto the civilian rifle for the express purpose of making it "sound" scarier than other firearms.
If you crush someone's skull with a claw-hammer, you have "assaulted" them, thus an "assault-hammer." You can place it in front of any object you wish to "assault" someone with, including your fists.
Semi-automatic rifles make up approximately 20% of the roughly 400 million firearms owned by Americans, making them the most popular style rifles owned.
As to the estimated 100 million firearms owners, which are owned not only by people on the right, but also people on the left in politics, almost all of them are law-abiding people who take their ownership seriously.
Even in nations with strict gun laws, gun crimes occur. As to mass murders, I've pointed out in other posts about mass murders by individuals weilding nothing more than knives. A person determined to murder others, will always find a way.
Bottom line, punish the criminal not the non-criminals.
