Rather than wring our hands at the power they have over us, and their willingness to use it, we must remove that power.

"Kansas has become the state which most strictly oversees the governor’s emergency declarations in a purported health crisis, including business closings, limiting such declarations to 15 days. After 15 days the legislature must vote to extend the measures, or they are terminated.

The bill, Kansas HB 2016, which was introduced by a Democrat, Kansas State Representative John Carmichael of Wichita, became law on June 4, 2020.

Since that time, over 300 pieces of legislation have been introduced in 45 states that relate to the oversight of governors’ emergency powers. As of April 6, 2022, twelve bills aimed at increasing legislative oversight of gubernatorial emergency power authority have been enacted in nine states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Utah. But the law in Kansas is the most restrictive on the governor."

That is a good start, but governors should never be granted "emergency powers" ever. If there is some issue that threatens the safety and security of the citizens like illegal aliens invading, the governor should warn the public via memos in English sent through the US mail, or email, or simply just stated on the state website. The governor or even the state legislature having potential "emergency powers" is anti-Constitutional and better suited for a 3rd world dictatorship, which the USA is, but still.
