What are the arguments against it?

when youre registered with the government you are no longer a free person,,,

SOOOO getting a drivers license, signing up for medicare or signing up to vote all make you NOT free?

Quite a few. One biggie is some think it would solve illegal immigration. Here is a forbes on that.

Remember this came about 9/11. They thought it would help against terrorism. Don't think it would could have an effect on that.

Sure. But not when you consider government powers and an ID. I see no big diff between a state ID and a national ID.
