Did you know that Shirley Temple was the original choice to play Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz? The reason she never played the part was that 20th Century would not trade her to MGM - even though MGM was willing to trade Clarke Gable for her! MGM had to find one of their own actresses to play the part.

Tom Selleck was the original choice to play Indiana Jones - but he was under a television contract and could not - ho hum - they had to find another actor.

I didn't know this untill recently - that Robert Blake was a little rascal. He played a charector called Mickey in the later version when Spanky was older.

Speaking of Spanky - did you know Pete the pup was a pitbull?

I forgot - I was watching 'E' true Hollywood stories about the Brady Bunch (no laughing) and it was said that Gene Hackman auditioned for the part of Mike Brady the father.

I didn't know anything about her....I know the witch was originally played by someone else but was burnt during filming. The tin man was originally played by Buddy Epsom (did I spell his name correct?) but he became ill from the silver paint.

Did you know if you watch The Wizard of Oz there is someone who hanged themself on the studio but no one knows who he is..The part is where they are in the woods and there is a log house he's on the left side of that hanging there..and also there is a small child that you can see in the woods part, but children were not allowed there durning taping..There is something else to but i can't remember the other one..weird huh?

I thought that 'hanging' story was bogus. I never noticed, but then never looked for anyone hanging.
But I do know that there were three pairs of ruby shoes and all three were in the filming. If you look at Garlands feet, sometimes they are high, sometimes flats and sometimes a middle heel.

If MGM got their way, Shirley Temple would have been Dorthy.
The most famous song 'somewhere over the rainbow' would have been dumped (I hate that song anyway).
Buddy Ebson would have been the tin man - but became ill from the paint.
The Witches, good and bad were originally played by other actresses.
When the movie came out it was considered a kids film that would soon finds it way by the wayside....what do critics know?
The director of this film also directed Gone With The Wind at the same time....but had a lot of help.
Garlands life was never the same and later she often wished she had never made the movie because it changed her life.
I love the Lollipop Guild.

If you watch Disney movies, they always put a little bit of another disney movie in the current one. In Toy Story, there were (if I remember correctly) bits of the Lion King- either a song or something.

If you watch Pixar's "Monters, Inc.", at the very end when Sully is taking Boo back to her bedroom, she runs around the room collecting toys and handing them to Sully... one is a squeaky toy of Nemo and another one is Woody. I never noticed until someone pointed that out to me. (I've never noticed your Toy Story reference, but I'll have to check that out).

And, I think you're right about the ghostly figure in Three Men and a baby Jeff, I heard it was fake as well.

You have to have a wide screen tv to see it..i have noticed that about the shoes..

I've seen that. It's kind of eery looking. But it could just be some kid standing behind the set, or it could even be a cardboard cut-out of someone. Somehow it didn't look real.

I also saw what was supposed to be someone hanging in the background of an OZ scene. It's difficult to be sure exactly what it is you're looking at. It's a silhouette, it's far in the distance (or small), and it's very brief.

What I thought was alot more interesting was watching The Wizard of Oz with the sound off, but with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon playing at the right time. The timing of musical changes and lyrics is bizzare, and can't be accidental. For example, just as Dorothy opens the door of her house to reveal Oz, and the movie changes to color, the song Money begins.

Just as the MGM lion roars the second time at the very begining, press play.

Here's a few facts about the Wizard of Oz that I bet you didn't know, mainly about the book.

The book was written around the turn of the 20th century, when the public was deciding whether to stay with the silver standard or go over to gold. Don't ask me why which metal we used was so important, but it was a big issue. The author, L. Frank Baum, was opposed to the gold standard and wrote a highly symbolic book about it, named "The Wizard of Oz."

In the book, the "yellow brick" (golden) road went absolutely nowhere, yet dozens of munchkins were urging them down it, anyway, and they were blindly led into following it, thus symbolizing the Republican politicians (who supported the gold standard) shoveling people down what he believed was a dead-end road.

Dorothy was the average American citizen, suddenly engulfed in a world of politics. Toto just added flavor to the story.

The scarecrow was the average American farmer, desirous of an education, thinking it was quintessential to surviving in the changing world.

The tin man was the American factory worker, desiring something more emotional and fulfilling than slapping together pieces of steel all day.

The cowardly lion was presidential candidate Bryan, who ran against McKinley in support of the silver standard, but lost the election (before the book was written) and dropped off the political radar.

The emerald city was representative of the American economy, not able to see past anything but green (or greenbacks, as the scrutinized paper money was called), mainly because they were forced to look through green-shaded glasses.

In the end, the wise old Wizard of Oz proved that all of them had what they needed, and simply didn't know it. By the way, Dorothy's slippers were silver in the book, being representative of the silver standard that American had been on, and was what Baum believed was needed. In the movie, color was fairly new and red looked cooler, thus the change.

Also, when the four of them finished their quest, the people of the emerald city begain to remove their sunglasses and see things as they really were, instead of through their green filter.

There're many more symbolic characters and references, but I cannot remember all of them. Nearly everything in that movie is a reference to something about the competition between the gold and silver standards.

Bet you'll never look at that story the same again, will you.

Yes, I suppose I should have mentioned this:

1.) you should be very familiar with DSotM, all it's changes and all it's lyrics (that's what makes it bizzare, if you haven't listened to that album a hundred times already, who cares, ya'know?)

and just as importantly,

2.) you should smoke yourself retarded beforehand.
