Most over-rated college football coaches, according to other football coaches

LSU is a great school, great football team, but they've had poor coaching for many years. They've had some of the best players in the country, and did a very poor job developing them. I have no faith in coach O.

LSU will probably win 8 or 9 games this year.

We're riding on our rep currently IMO.
I agree to an extent. But, they are loaded with talent. They need a good quarterback. They have one of the best running backs in the country.

That's what I mean. We get good talent because LSU. We'd better hurry up and do something with that talent before they quit coming.
I agree. If coach O doesn't do it this year, he's done. LSU has to win at least 9 games or coach O is out.

LSU has to beat Bama in order for coach O to keep his job. LSU will not beat Bama this year. Alabama has so much talent, and are so deep, their 2nd and 3rd team players could win 9 games without a single 1st team player. They have a stable of running backs and receivers. They're deep in the secondary, and their offensive line may be better than last year. They have 3 quarterbacks that could be a starter for 90% of the 130 FBS schools. Their defensive line is going to be mean nasty MFers this year also.

Now you've made me cry.

Mysogonist!
Sorry. It was unintentional, I assure you.

I have been a Crimson Tide fans since I was a kid in the 1960s. I lived about 8 or 9 blocks from campus. We would ride our bikes over to watch practice when Bear was in his tower.

Bear & Stabler were a great combination. So were Bear & Namath. So was Bear and so many people.

Saban has been remarkable, not just for his winning record & titles. He pushes academics. The Alabama football program has a higher graduation rate than the national average for all students, not just athletes.
Yes, Saban brings the whole package to Alabama football. Bear was great, no doubt. I was born and raised in Alabama. I live in Alabama now. Been an Alabama fan since I was born. I've been watching Alabama football since I was a very young kid.

My twin lives in Alabama but is still all LSU. It gets tense sometimes lol.
I know what you mean. I have two daughters that are HUGE LSU fans.

I lived in Baton Rouge for 3 1/2 years. I lived in Louisiana a total of ten years. My youngest daughter was born in Baton Rouge.

If you're ever back this way, I'm right by BR!

Well the defenses are probably on par with each other although fsu secondary is better, but defense is easy part. I suspect game will be decided by which offense has the most cohesiveness for first game of season. I really wish this game was not the first one on the docket.
It'll be a very good opening game. Don't miss it.

I like that Saban has continually scheduled major teams for the first game. I bet it keeps the team focused during summer workouts and practices. If you are playing a cupcake for the first game, the players may slack off. If your first game is the #3 team in the country, they bust their ass to get ready.

I just wonder if the Crimson Tide and FSU will meet again in the playoffs.

Thanks. I'll take you up on that invite for sure. I have a daughter that lives in Baton Rouge, and another daughter that lives in Hammond. I'll visit you.

I always had a blast at games in Baton Rouge. Great tailgating, loud rowdy crowd, and some serious defenses.

There's a good chance of them playing twice this year. Most sports experts say both will make it to the championship series. The top 6 or 8 teams looked flawed to me. I'm looking for a team out of the middle of the ranking to surprise folks. USC seems legit. Ohio State seems legit. And, of course Alabama. It's between Oklahoma State and maybe FSU or Clemson for the fourth spot. But, that's a "way-too-early" prediction.

Yeah he schedules big name teams at the beginning of the season for a reason. That's generally their worst game of the year, and then he schedules cupcake teams like Troy State later in the year so that he can rest his players and let them heal up.

He did this cheesy move again this year with MERCER the second to last game of the year right before the Iron Bowl.

Very cool! I am at Southeastern often. I'll cook something or make the hubby burn meat so we have to order pizza!

Yep, he did. And why is it their worst game of the year? It isn't that way for Bama. Are you saying that those big name programs can't get their teams ready for the season opener?

My way-too-early prediction for the playoffs is Bama, Ohio State, USC and FSU. I like Clemson, especially their defense, but they may have lost too much on the offensive side of things.

No, it is because there is such a high turn over of talent in college football.

So I guess Alabama is so good fsu shouldn't even show up. I think I have seen this movie before.
Alabama FSU will be the best game that you'll see all year. Two talented evenly matched teams. Both teams loaded to the gills. My guess is over 1,000 yds total offense. At least 800 yds of passing yardage between them. Don't miss it.

Score ---------------------- Alabama 52 ..................... FSU 44
Sonny you just said how mean and bad ass the Alabama defense was and now you are going to give fsu 44 points. If fsu gets 44 points they will win the game. Since it is first game I will go for lower score. 24-21. Fisher is the best second half coach in the game but as you all have already noted Saban knows how to win. From my viewpoint the semiholes have a lot more motivation to beat bama than vice versa. We apparently have a beast of a defensive end as a freshman and a running back on par with the departed dalvin cook. But both are young. If bama has the same quarterback as last year then both teams quarterbacks will be mirror images of each other. Alabamas front four tried to intimidate Clemson in the championship game and I am sure that tactic will be repeated. If I remember right this will be the third year our O line has been together. I think it will be a heavyweight fight but I am old enough to remember the 30 to nothing whipping that Miami put on us many years ago on the first game. After the eclipse I am sooooooooo ready for, this game.

You may very well be right. I'm excited and ready for football. I've been counting the days since last January. My calendar has been marked since the championship game 33 weeks and 5 days before September 2nd. Now, we're down to 21 days. It's been a long 33 weeks for me. We have 21 weeks and 3 days until the next championship game in January. My calendar stays marked by day and week. I'm very excited. ROLL TIDE

The most overrated of all time had to be Dennis Erickson. He inherited a great program at WSU and ruined it and went on to FSU and ruined it before going to the pros and showing his entire career was crap.
Didn't he coach at Miami a year or two?
Yes he did.
He had a really good year at Oregon State in 2000. They went 11-1 and crushed Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Not a bad coach IMHO.

I think Pete Carroll is good. He did well in both college and pros

3 college football writers talked to 20% of the head coaches at FBS college football programs. The interviews/polls were done with the promise of anonymity.

They were asked who the most over-rated head coaches are.

Jim Harbaugh came in first with 14% of the votes.
There was a 3 way tie for second between Lane Kiffin, Lovey Smith, and (are you ready for this?) Nick Saban each getting 9% of the votes.

Nick Saban is over-rated? In what alternate universe?
Saban gets the men that are the least able to make it into college and he really has the picks of the litter from that point.

how hard is it to convince a kid that he can focus on football instead of books to come and play for you?

send him to a place like ND and he's fucked

What? You might want to do a little research on the subject.

Since Saban got to UA, the academics for the football team have steadily improved. Here is the annual listing of academic rankings for the Top 25 college football teams. The Crimson Tide ranks #7. College Football Top 25, Ranked by Academics

And there is this little tidbit to educate you: Alabama football just set a national record that probably won't get the attention it deserves - Yellowhammer News The Crimson Tide broke the national record in December of 2015. When we played our bowl game against Michigan, we fielded 29 players who had earned their degree, including 3 players who had earned a Master's Degree.

Saban is VERY serious about academics. The notion that he tells a kid he can focus on football instead of academics is simply bullshit. There are graduate assistants who have the daily task of checking to make sure the players are in class. He does not allow slacking in the classroom, even for stars.
