We need a serious health program for the nation. This isn't it.

I don't think that Michelle or Barack are really serious. They're literally making fun of it.

We need an organized national program that encourages people to exercise, not forces them to. Funny thing is, we already have one, but there is no emphasis from Washington. Instead we have people telling us how to eat. Jack LaLain once said "You can eat the best foods but it won't matter if you don't exercise". They already know this in Europe:

Volksmarching is a corruption of the German word “volksmarsch,” or “people walk,” an organized, noncompetitive walk of 5 to 10 kilometers (3.1 or 6.2 miles). In the 18 years of the Piedmont Pacers’ existence, the club has sponsored 82 organized walks, with participant registrations, checkpoints and souvenir medals or patches. The club also offers routes for five year-round events, where volksmarchers pick up directions from a “walk box” and walk on their own.

Volksmarchers say the lure of their sport is fun, fellowship and fitness.

Many who have volksmarched in Germany remember the fun of those walks. “It was like a festival, with bratwurst and beer and people mingling after [the walk],”
said Linda Jensen of Clarksville, who encountered the sport during her husband’s military service in Germany.

“A weekend volksmarch can erase work-related tension,” said Gloria Reedy of Dover Township, Pa., as she hiked around Hashawha on a recent Pacers walk. “Just getting out to see all the beautiful areas, towns and woods, it’s like a stress release,” she said.

For some, the fellowship of the walks is poignant. Carl Frock Jr. of Finksburg, a former president of the Pacers, has logged more than 26,000 kilometers since his first volksmarch in 1988. He and his son, Carl Frock III, began walking together.

“We walked every Saturday, summer, winter, rain or shine,” Carl Jr. said. “I’ve done walks in absolute pouring down rain. I’ve done walks in snow. Just the fact that you’re out there, the snow’s coming down, it’s quiet and peaceful. You’re not worried about the car sliding. It’s just you and nature.”

Carl Frock III died of cancer last year. Carl Jr. remains an active volksmarcher.

When volkssporters discuss fitness benefits, women often say walking keeps weight off. Men frequently mention conditioning for speed and distance.

There is no prize for finishing first or fastest. The hiking clubs from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, who formed the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) in 1968, agreed to keep the sport noncompetitive.

I prepped for Special Forces Selection while Volksmarching. I carried a 65lb rucksack on all of the walks, but you can get excellent exercise just from walking at a brisk pace as well. It's great, because they had the course well mapped out, and visiting different venues erased the monotony of training. My wife was my pace-man and kept me from dragging my butt up those trails. Here incentive was to get back before all of the other walkers bought up all of the great German pastries.

At this link of Stars And Stripes, which is where I found all of the events that were happening for that weekend, you can see how many groups are involved in sponsoring events. It's a big deal in Germany. Search - Travel - Stripes

This is the kind of program we need. Not this "Let's Move" nonsense. I don't think anyone directing it is serious. Volksmarching is something that tends to run itself. It wouldn't cost the government a dime. Maybe that's why they don't want to do it, because then they wouldn't be running the thing.

I can't make this stuff up:

Notice the emphasis on children, when we have an aging population.
The focus is way off. We need to get everyone who wants to be fit in shape, not just a bunch of cute little kids.

I went on volksmarches as a kid, it's true, almost the whole town would walk in a big group. This was in Bavaria so it may be more of a southern thing.

I predict Michelle will be as successful as Nancy's "Just say no to drugs" campaign.

It's nothing more than a socialist ploy.

It won't make anyone any healthier.

I loved Volksmarches! I usually went twice a weekend, one short one and one long one. I still have tons of the little medals they gave out to participants. You also have a card that gets stamped and you accumulate points of different sorts (distances, #of marches) and "level up". They used to have a Volksmarch club on the Army base here, but I haven't seen anything about them the last few years.
There's another less formal group that is more active internationally, the Hash House Harriers. Anyone ever heard of them?

At least she's trying to do something.

It doesn't matter what President and Mrs Obama do.

The fat, lazy right will whine about it because whining is what they do best.

Wow, that was useless.....as usual.

When are you gonna get wise to the fact that just about everything these people do is meant for show. It doesn't work.

Only because we're a nation of fat asses. Especially the southern states.

While I agree with you, it needs to be understood that it starts with our kids. If they get enough exercise and maintain a healthy weight through high school, they will be much less likely to become obese as adults. Phys Ed should be required for all students 1-12 five days per week. The short term costs would be more than paid for in long term savings. Not only that, but healthy kids have an easier time learning.

There's no shortage of fat asses around here. You need to get out more.

It was that way when I was in school. It was called PE and it was mandatory for all. What happened?

You don't start a program with children. You start it with their parents. Kids can't stay focused on anything without their parents' guidance.

That's great for parents who take an active role in their kids' lives, but we all know that the percentage of parents actually doing that is fairly low.

Wow! She's got fantastic arms. I did notice she's filmed from the waist up. I guess that buffalo butt, junk-inna-trunk ass of hers just doesn't promote the image.

Good point!

Actually it's not, but I try hard to get along.

I try real real hard. :(

No kidding.

The trick is changing patterns.

This "Let's Move" won't do that.
