The state of Canadian policing is horrific. Americans may have their issues but you have vastly more remedies and consequences are real. The successful lawsuits and penalties for violation of citizens rights is meaningful in the U.S.
Durham police have completed about 19 per cent of the recommendations in the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) report, according to the province’s policing oversight body — despite comments from the chief and police board chair that most have been completed.
An initial analysis shows the service and the board have completed six of 32 recommendations, the Inspectorate of Policing (IOP) said in a statement Friday. It said 12 recommendations are in progress and 14 — close to half — are not complete.
The IOP is satisfied with the progress on the recommendations, spokesperson Rima Amri said in the statement. But regional councillor Sterling Lee called the update a "far cry" from the progress described last year by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Chief Peter Moreira and DRPS board chair and Ajax Mayor, Shaun Collier.
