No true diehard Star Trek fan wouldn't know the name of Bill Smithers, though probably better recognized generally for his starring in Dallas or the movie Papillon where he stared with Steve McQueen as the warden. He played the role of RM Merik on Star Trek a minor spaceship captain never able to cut it in Star Fleet who crashed on a planet and became Merikus there, a planet patterned partly after the Roman Empire though they had mid-20th Century technology, where they televised gladiator competition, to which the crew of the Enterprise became embroiled.
OK, so I have fiendish recall of all things Star Trek; Smithers lived to be 98. His passing away occurred back a couple weeks ago around the end of May but was not announced until now. No cause of death given (probably old age).
