Mark Cuban and whoever else runs the Mavericks just made what could be one of the worst trades in NBA history. This is why the Lakers win championships. Of course, there is more to this story, and Doncic obviously wore out his welcome in Dallas and they decided to get something for him before he could just walk away, so its possible this helps Dallas this year and next year, but AD is nearing the end of his career.
The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring Luka DonÄiÄ from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis as part of a late-night blockbuster that sent shockwaves through the NBA, league sources confirmed Saturday.
The stunning move sends DonÄiÄ, a five-time NBA All-Star, to one of the leagueās top markets to compete alongside LeBron James in what are likely the waning years of Jamesā Hall of Fame career. It marks the first team other than Dallas that DonÄiÄ ā a 2018 first-round pick ā will play for in his seven-year NBA career.
The 25-year-old DonÄiÄ was eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million contract extension with the Mavericks this summer. All signs pointed toward him putting pen to paper on that historic deal with Dallas before this abrupt move.
Mavericks players were blindsided by the trade. One player, according to a source briefed on his thinking, believed DonÄiÄ would accompany Dallas on its five-game road trip.
Instead, DonÄiÄ, who has been oft-injured this season, appears headed for Los Angeles. Heās played in just 22 games, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists in those contests, and he hasnāt competed since sustaining a calf strain on Christmas.
For Davis, 31, it ends a six-year stint with the Lakers that included an NBA championship in 2020. The 10-time All-Star averaged 24.8 points, 11 rebounds and 3.2 assists while with Los Angeles, and is now slated to pair with eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving in Dallas.
The multi-team deal, which includes the Utah Jazz, will also see the Lakers land Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while the Mavs will acquire Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, league sources confirmed. ESPN first reported the news of the trade.
