Mark Cuban and whoever else runs the Mavericks just made what could be one of the worst trades in NBA history. This is why the Lakers win championships. Of course, there is more to this story, and Doncic obviously wore out his welcome in Dallas and they decided to get something for him before he could just walk away, so its possible this helps Dallas this year and next year, but AD is nearing the end of his career.

The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis as part of a late-night blockbuster that sent shockwaves through the NBA, league sources confirmed Saturday.

The stunning move sends Dončić, a five-time NBA All-Star, to one of the league’s top markets to compete alongside LeBron James in what are likely the waning years of James’ Hall of Fame career. It marks the first team other than Dallas that Dončić — a 2018 first-round pick — will play for in his seven-year NBA career.

The 25-year-old Dončić was eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million contract extension with the Mavericks this summer. All signs pointed toward him putting pen to paper on that historic deal with Dallas before this abrupt move.

Mavericks players were blindsided by the trade. One player, according to a source briefed on his thinking, believed Dončić would accompany Dallas on its five-game road trip.

Instead, Dončić, who has been oft-injured this season, appears headed for Los Angeles. He’s played in just 22 games, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists in those contests, and he hasn’t competed since sustaining a calf strain on Christmas.

For Davis, 31, it ends a six-year stint with the Lakers that included an NBA championship in 2020. The 10-time All-Star averaged 24.8 points, 11 rebounds and 3.2 assists while with Los Angeles, and is now slated to pair with eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving in Dallas.

The multi-team deal, which includes the Utah Jazz, will also see the Lakers land Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while the Mavs will acquire Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, league sources confirmed. ESPN first reported the news of the trade.

I know, I don't follow NBA much anymore but someone posted a video of just how dominant Lukas years were, one year in particular and whatever metric was used has been used for years and it put him above EVERY NBA player, by some margin, including Jordan, Kobe and others. I was shocked.

Lakers always seem to get what they want and it appears Dallas didn;t feel comfortable with his conditioning and his supermax contract coming up.

Perhaps if the Mavericks had a majority owner who has a clue this trade would not have happened. It's a terrible trade for the Mavs, getting rid of a first team All NBA player who is 25 for a 31 year old who is injured just as often.

It's better for the NBA that he goes to Showtime anyways. The league is struggling and Luka could become the face of the NBA. He does seem out of shape though, probably drinks a little too much. Perhaps that's his super power?

He's always out of shape, imagine if LeBron, who is always in shape, can get through to him on how to actually take care of himself. Great teams pull off deals like this one, this is historically bad for Dallas, they get someone at the end of his career and Max Klieber for a top 5 player who is only 25.

I agree he works best for the NBA in LA, which also makes me go hmmmmm......

The Lakers got the 25 year old MVP they needed to succeed Lebron. The Mavericks got a 31 year old all-star who has a body that is always breaking down.

(1) One metric that the NBA always ignores is that the Mavs win about as often when Luca is injured as they do when he plays.

(2) The Lakers would become the most watched team in the NBA, except for the fact that their home games and everything else they play out West, start at around 10pm - too late for east coast fukkers like me to watch.

(3) It will be interesting to see how Luka plays with LeBron. I want to see more of D. Knecht.

I necessarily don’t think it’s a bad deal. He could’ve demanded the super max deal at the end of this year to keep him in Dallas. He lost a lot of potential money on this deal for his next contract not to mention he’s gonna have to pay 14% state income tax now or something like that. He is an incredible offensive talent, but his defense is lacking and his conditioning is horrible. I don’t see him being a great elite player into his 30’s if he doesn’t get his conditioning under control soon. He looks like porky pig out there on the court.

Is anyone else pissed that their own team's GM didn't grab Dončić?
Freaken Daryl Morey

Doncic reminds me a little of Charles Barkley. Immense talent, always out of shape, never quite got it done. Maybe Lebron can influence him to take his fitness seriously.

no GM asked if he was available knowing his contract and friction made the impossible -possible.
No one asked likely because no one thought it was even on the table that he was available. He’s a superstar that’s just coming into the prime of his career. Those guys don’t get traded.

Definitely a shocker. Luka must be a pain to deal with, is all I can figure.

Luka is injury prone.

The Mavs could have got WAYYYYYY more if they had announced he was on the market and shipped him around.

This trade makes no sense, it’s shocking

the same way Zion was quietly being shopped: not in basketball shape, risk of injuries, starting to get injured, estimated short career because all of the above then add rediculous $ to come in new contract that ties the hands of a club especially all in one basket that when injured destroys deep playoff chances.
