Should Marijuana be legalized for medical purposes?

Marijuana is a very controversial topic in our political world today, and I would like to know what our society has to say itabout the way some view it. Some people think it is a Class A drug that is fatal and similar to all the other hard core drugs (i.e. Ecstacy and LSD). But others, like me, know that marijuana is just another plant found in the wilderness that has medical compounds that can help the ill. Yes, marijuana does have psychoactive compounds, but there is no doubt that there are other drugs prescribed by doctors that are more potent. Oxycontin and Morphine are prescribed to patients with chronic pain, but the symptoms are a bit psychoactive. Unlike those drugs, marijuana has a chemical compound called Cannabidiol (CBD) that can be extracted away from the psychoactive compounds in it; such as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). If there is proof that marijuana has medical purposes then why is it classified as a Class A drug? Yes, it is used as a recreational drug at times, but that does not give an excuse to make it illegal because, unlike alcohol or tobacco, it is not fatal. Marijuana can be harmful in the sense that one can develop lung cancer for smoking it, but there are healthier ways to use marijuana; for instance, cooking it and consuming it. If there are ways to avoid harmful circumstances under marijuana than why shouldn't it be the first drug recommendation to patients? These are things society needs to learn about to fully understand the debate on marijuana. If evidence is not being shown to society then how would any one know what marijuana really is? What are your thoughts and opinions? The link provided is for any one who wants to learn more about marijuana and it's medical purposes by Dr. Sanja Gupta. (copy and paste link)

If the medical argument could be separated from the chronic potheads... I'd be fine with medical applications. But in reality, the medical argument is nothing more than a means to get the pothead nose under the 'legalizing pot' tent.

So... 'No'.

And FTR: I smoked pot dam' near everyday, pot from 14 years old through my late 30s... There was no upside.

Sorry you had a bad trip man...

Dude... it wasn't a bad trip. I loved smokin' pot. I've smoked more pot than most of these kids will ever see...

But the fact is that it was not a plus in my life... and even when I was smoking it every day... I never thought that legalizing its use was a good idea. 'Cause.. it's just not.

So with that logic...You are ok with potheads, since you're ok with medical applications that leads to chronic use... ie. potheads...

But prescriptions pills don't lead to death(sarcasm), yet they are legal....

And by the vie, since NJ was put into the UN treaty he US feds have outlawed medical research...In the US.Now you see why we get medical reports from other places in the free world....

How is it any worse than alcohol?

"worse"?

Why does it need to be worse than alcohol?

How about Cocaine?

Should it need to be worse than Cocaine?

Pot strips one of their ambition, their initiative... their cognitive acuity.

And today's pot is HEROINE compared to what it was in the day.

True story... a few years back, I had a crew of a dozen or so guys on a project that I had a couple hours from town. So I put everyone up in a hotel over there...

I stopped by the hotel before I headed back to town one evenin' and the kids were passin' a fatty and I was in a celebratory mood and took a few hits... that's all! Three small, tokes... I had a few beers to boot and headed home.

About a half hour later... I'm on a long strip of interstate that runs across the glades called "Alligator Alley" ... and I broke out into this profound sweat... and was on well on my way to passin' out... so I pull over and let the kid that was riding with me drive. Within about 5 minutes I was literally SOAKED in sweat and BLIND AS A BAT! Weirdest thing was that the blindess was 'white'... All I could see was 'white'. Held my hand up to my face and all I could see was white. I AM TELLING YOU: MY ASS WAS BLIND!

Don't know what that was... but that's higher than I ****'in bargained for right there.

Now... as I said, I grew up in South Florida, in the 60s and 70s... I've smoked a LOT of pot. But this shit you kids are into today is some dangerous shit. I'll take a hit on rare occasion, but never more than one and I always end up regretting it. It just puts me to sleep anymore.

LOL! But on that afternoon, I thought that shit was about to put me in THE BIG SLEEP. True story... .

Well I'm neither a kid (I'm 36!), nor do I do any drugs.

So you had a bad personal experience . . .so what? Most people do not have a bad experience. Also, alcohol causes many, many, many more deaths than marijuana. I'll bet that alcohol causes more deaths per year than marijuana has since they've been keeping track of these things. Also, marijuana is a naturally growing plant. Alcohol is a toxic man made poison. Yet . . . alcohol AND CIGARETTES are legal and marijuana is not. Do you have an explanation for that?

It doesn't matter. Government has no business telling us what to eat, drink, smoke or think. This is exactly the mentality driving misguided civil rights laws that try to change our prejudices.

In Colorado, all these carpet baggers from out of state insinuate them selves here and overthrow common sense or what the will of the natives want. We native Coloradans didn't want to legalize pot, illegal aliens or want or need light rail. Nope, that out of stater, Hikenlooper, and his weak equivocating bunch. I am channeling TRUE Coloradans like Gene Amole...

Well, I'm 54 and from where I'm standin'... you're a kid. And THAT was 'an experience'... a BAD experience would be perhaps the time I walked 30 miles with no skin on the bottom of my feet... or ran out of air 80' down in the gulf of Messy Co. (Which was actually a pretty cool experience if ya dial out the whole 'dam' near died' thing... I'll spare ya the story).

Alcohol, like pot, doesn't pour itself down anyone's neck. So whatever PEOPLE DO when they're suffering self-stupidization... by having allowed themselves to over-indulge. Drink enough and at some point ya SHOULD figure out that drinkin' doesn't justify stupidity.

But I agree that one of Pot's strengths is that it is self limiting... Bottom line is that all recreational drug abuse (including alcohol) stunts you're growth... (Intellectual and emotional) Doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to do it, but they shouldn't be allowed to receive public subsidies because they screwed themselves up on it... nor should they be allowed to use insurance to pay for 'treatment' to help them get OFF it.

Not a big fan of any of it... seen ALL of it **** up a LOT of people.

And... alcohol is made with naturally growing plants, same with tobacco. Do ya REALLY think that adding ONE more naturally growing plant to the list of shit idiots will abuse to their detriment and the detriment of their families & employers?

Really?

That is absolutely true... Worst Freak-show I ever witnessed was on some street mall in Boulder. There was more human debris on that street than the yard at Sing-Sing on Parolee Dance Night.

It didn't help that I was there with Jimmy Hendricks... who in this story, was a short white racist who had absolutely NO musical talent and less sensitivity for cultural diversity. Twisted night!

The guy that took us down there said those kids were mostly students and a non-stop cause of non-stop trouble.

Really?

Yes. The war on drugs has been a complete failure. We have wasted BILLIONS of dollars on trying to control what substances people will put into their own bodies. Let them screw themselves up if that's what they want. They will do it anyways.

Dude... it wasn't a bad trip. I loved smokin' pot. I've smoked more pot than most of these kids will ever see...

But the fact is that it was not a plus in my life... and even when I was smoking it every day... I never thought that legalizing its use was a good idea. 'Cause.. it's just not.

How is it any worse than alcohol?

"worse"?

Why does it need to be worse than alcohol?

How about Cocaine?

Should it need to be worse than Cocaine?

Absolutely true... We should have just applied higher standards of acceptable behavior and a shit-load more "JUDGMENT".

People are going to put into their bodies what they want, and there really isn't anything we can do about it. Unless you want to keep wasting money on putting them in jail, only to release them later and have them go RIGHT BACK to whatever they were doing before.

Besides, regardless of whether or not you thought you were "dying," you probably were not dying and you did not die obviously. That is absolutely no reason to make marijuana, a relatively benign substance in comparison to alcohol, illegal.

Secondly, there are studies that show hemp fights cancer. Not many, but a few.

But nothing else is shown to fight Cancer..................so why are we stalling on the research? Big Government.

Further evidence that cannabis reduces tumor growth in new study
Further evidence that cannabis reduces tumor growth in new study - Medical News Today
The main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis - tetrahydrocannabinol - could be used to reduce tumor growth in cancer patients, according to an international research team.
Previous studies have suggested that cannabinoids, of which tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one, have anti-cancer properties. In 2009, researchers at Complutense University in Spain found that THC induced the death of brain cancer cells in a process known as "autophagy."

illustration-of-cancer-cells.jpg

When human tumors in mice were targeted with doses of THC, the researchers found that two cell receptors were particularly associated with an anti-tumor response.
The researchers found that administering THC to mice with human tumors initiated autophagy and caused the growth of the tumors to decrease. Two human patients with highly aggressive brain tumors who received intracranial administration of THC also showed similar signs of autophagy, upon analysis.

Nope, it's true. I have had folks tell me they don't believe it. They think it just fights the effects of chemo, that it doesn't actually fight cancer. But that is just the whole point here. The medical establishment is about TREATING cancer. Anything that will ever have a chance to CURE cancer is forbidden. That is why this plant will forever remain federally banned. It runs against the whole medical establishments paradigm of a death care industry.

Hell, the government just had a whole coup d'état in taking over the industry, the last thing they are going to do is cure one of two major diseases that give their donors bucket loads of cash. CASH MEANS POWER. That cash comes at the deaths of Americans. Career politicians NEED those deaths, they need Americans PAYING THOSE MEDICAL BILLS. Treating illness makes more money than curing disease. Career politicians need cancer and they need death.

So as long as they can keep the secret that marijuana cures cancer, and stop research on we can get it to most effectively delivered and treat cancer? Then politicians will keep their money and their power. Americans dying means the health care system will stay rich, and by proxy, the political parasites will stay powerful.

But we are Americans right? are we not? America. The place where if the citizens didn't agree with a law, it should be changed. Isn't that why people move to America from other places... To fight for what they believe in..?

You are correct for the most part. Technically, a Democracy is when all the people in the Nation control the Federal Government. Republican is when the people of a state control the State Government. America is still battling who should have the power, State or Federal. Both have done absolutely Insane things and both have done good things.

Ironically, I've recently spoke to hundreds of Right Wingers that think the people shouldn't have a say in America. Only the elected officials should. And that's not America no matter what party. They quote Fox News stating, "What if Americans want a tax funded Vacation to Disney Land." (they all have the same quip because they all heard it from the same source, Rupert Merdoch.

So if someone thinks the majority of Americans shouldn't have the right to a voice and a vote, you haven't read the Constitution. But at the same time, lot's of Illegal Americans are voting. So again. All parties have good points and bad points, but the people are too busy to decifer politics. They just want a party to represent them so they don't have to get into INDIVIDUAL topics.

LOL! So three hits on a joint and I break out into a soaking sweat and ... not to put too much mustard on it, BUT there was the TEMPORARY BLINDESS... and this is no big deal?

LOL! Chris... let me tell my fear here. When > I < am the one preachin' against drug use... that's a pretty solid sign that we're TOTALLY BONED!

I've got a decades of experience in the use and abuse of just about every chemical one can ingest and probably survive... so I've got some cred in this particular area. And no one was able to tell me to 'just say no'... and all the evidence in the world couldn't keep me from imbibing, until it all crashed in around me.

So I know that no one is going to be convinced by anything I say here... but that isn't going to alter what I say about it.

Illicit drug abuse is a bad idea... It's not even a debatable point. Just color me a contrarian and leave it at that... And if it helps, I respect your position. You just need another 20 years to figure it out and THEN you can be the one sitting in a room full of kids telling you how much they know about it, despite their lacking the experience which proves them wrong.

I just hope it tickles you as much as it's tickled me.
