Officers walked into a scene seemingly "frozen in time" - a dusty teacup, an old television, and the mummified remains of a woman cocooned in blankets.

Their investigation centered on unraveling the mystery of how the woman had been left to decompose, forgotten and uncared for more than 40 years.

Hedviga Golik, born in 1924, had apparently brewed herself a cup of tea before settling into her beloved armchair in front of her black-and-white TV.

Croatian authorities said neighbors last saw her in 1966, when she would have been 42. Local residents had simply assumed she'd relocated from her apartment in Zagreb, the capital.

But she was found by officers and bailiffs in 2008 who had broken into the property to assist authorities in establishing ownership of the flat.

full story....

Sad.

If it was an apartment, maybe the landlord was.paying the property taxes.

If you had read the story........the apartment was given to her by her apparent boyfriend from that time, who was GIVEN the apartment for helping to build it. And he gave it to her.......apparently he didn't want it.

But yeah....I mean, nobody came around trying to collect the electric bill or the water bill?

And if she left her windows open, wouldn't the weather have destroyed the place? And have created mold, and wet areas from rain to destroy the walls and ceilings of apartments below......since she had the attic apartment?

Also appearing in the article... ownership was not established or known.

That was after she was thought to have moved away.

I'm just blown away that so many people didn't give a damn.......especially with it happening in their own building.
I mean, not even ONE social check up to see if she was still alive in there???? I mean, come on.

So, after 1966? Haha. Yes, I think we know that.

Problem is, there was no owner of record.

The article also noted it was a time when a lot of political shuffling around was occurring. So I'm sure the city/town was overwhelmed during that time period, and ownership of one apartment wasn't on their priorities list.
