I was discussing this with a friend the other night, a friend I happen to know used to smoke pot. It brought up a phenomenon I've noticed in other discussions, and never understood: the idea that I'm supposed to change or hide my negative opinion about something just because I know someone who does it (or did it).
I stated, quite clearly, that in my opinion, people who choose to smoke marijuana are not the brightest lights on the midway. My friend got all huffy and said, "Well, thanks for saying I'm stupid." I shrugged and said, "Just because I like you doesn't mean it wasn't still a dumbassed decision." He sulked for about ten minutes before changing the subject.
Does anyone out there understand why liking someone means I have to agree with everything they do and believe they're perfect?
