Mahomes Needlessly Injured in Fourth Quarter--Why Was He Still in the Game?

Well of course "Mahomes wanted to play." That's why you have a head coach. He gets paid to make smart decisions about using his players. With the playoffs nearing, Reid should have pulled Mahomes as soon as the game was clearly won. That point came after the Chiefs crossed midfield with 5 minutes left and with a 14-point lead. This should have been a no-brainer.
Maybe he called the no longer Bears head coach for advice.

Kansas City Chiefs' star QB Patrick Mahomes was injured 11 minutes into the fourth quarter with the Chiefs up 21-7 over the Cleveland Browns. With a 14-point lead and with only 4 minutes left, what in the devil was Mahomes still doing in the game? He had no business being on the field at that point. Once the Chiefs crossed midfield on that drive, Mahomes should have left the game and Carson Wentz should have come in for the final 5 minutes. The odds of a Browns' comeback at that point were wildly remote.
ever tried to sit mahomes down
tough task

Be accurate if you are going to start a thread on this subject. There was 7:57 left in the 4th quarter when Mahomes was injured, plenty of time for any NFL team to score twice.
Yeap, this morning, after watching a clearer version of the clip, I realized that there was 7:57 left when Mahomes was injured. However, I seriously doubt that the Browns could have scored two touchdowns in 7:57. The Browns went three-and-out after Mahomes got injured.

Furthermore, if the Chiefs had pulled Mahomes after they got the first down after crossing midfield and then run three running plays and then punted, they would have burned at least 2 minutes off the clock, leaving the Browns with barely 5 minutes to score two touchdowns.

Per reports this morning, Mahomes has a high ankle sprain and is "questionable" for the next game.

Coach was still working on the passing game! That last hit on Mahomes was so malicious! I hope those players were fined later! There was helmet to helmet contact! Looked as if that lard-arse saw Patrick falling forward & decided to try & decapitate him! :meow::dunno::stir:

The Chiefs dodged a huge bullet in the fact that Mahomes did not suffer a serious injury. But, does Mahomes have the common sense to sit out this weekend's game to ensure the high ankle sprain heals? Does Andy Reid have enough control to force Mahomes to sit out this weekend's game?

Judging from how gingerly Mahomes limped off the field after the injury, the high ankle sprain is fairly severe. Of course, if the injury is fully healed by game time, he should play. If not, he should sit out.

Finally, Clock Management 101 tells us you can burn 2 minutes off the clock with just three running plays. If you do that on two possessions, you burn 4 minutes off the clock.

Mahomes has a dead arm and can't throw an accurate pass over 15 yards.

Mahomes has been relatively injury free since he came into the NFL. Severe injuries anyway.

KC's Oline sucks.....and the only way they can win games is by holding.

This game pretty much exposed that.

When you are nearing the playoffs, you should take every reasonable opportunity to limit the playing time of your best players, especially your QB. It is that simple. It is just common sense. NBA teams routinely reduce the playing time of their best players shortly before the playoffs.

When Mahomes got injured, they were just three games away from the playoffs, and they have tough opponents in each of those three games--which was all the more reason Reid should have pulled Mahomes from the game after they gained the first down after crossing midfield. At that point, the odds that the impotent Browns' offense could score two touchdowns in no more than 7-8 minutes were remote. Reid could have burned 4 minutes off the clock in two possessions just by running the ball three times in a row in each possession, or else burned 2 minutes off the clock and forced Cleveland to use all of their timeouts.

Unlike other players, the QB plays every play when the offense is on the field about 99% of the time. In contrast, RBs, TEs, WRs frequently rotate in and out, but not the QB. On defense, many teams frequently rotate linemen in and out to give them a breather.
