Poland moved from a Communist system to a more Social Democracy with the considerable help of joining the EU.. The EU did helped massively in reducing corruption and increasing investment. I remeber Polish coming to Ireland and we having to explain what the European Court of Justice (ECJ) was and how it was going to change Poland.
An EU Citizen can appeal to ECJ over there own National Supreme Court, this means National Governments can't even over rule their people's rights...
