SAN DIEGO — Construction started Friday on the US-Mexico border wall project at Border Field State Park, the third project in San Diego County.

The work will replace about 14 miles of scrap metal wall that stands up to 10 feet high with a wall between 18 and 30 feet tall. The new wall will also have an anti-climbing plate, Customs and Border Protection said.

Crews will build the wall starting half a mile from the Pacific Ocean, east to the bottom of Otay Mountain in East County.


Work is being done by SLSCO, a Texas-based construction company, at a cost of $147 million.

While the CBP said the existing wall was effective, it was erected in the 1990s from Vietnam-era scrap metal and needed replacing to deal with what the CBP described as an increased cross-border threat.

“The construction of this new substantial wall will improve overall border security, the safety and effectiveness of Border Patrol agents, the safety of the public, and will enhance the atmosphere for business and commerce in the area,” Rodney Scott, the Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector said.

“Under this President’s leadership, we have a renewed commitment to secure our border,” Ronald Vitiello, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Acting Deputy Commissioner said. “The new primary wall-project represents an important milestone in our work to secure the international border. Not only does it significantly upgrade our existing infrastructure in San Diego, it also marks the third concurrent wall project in the U.S. and reflects CBP’s unwavering commitment to secure our borders and protect our Nation.”

Two other border projects in progress included two miles of wall in Calexico, Calif., and 20 miles of border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mex.

Because we live in a country structured where just about anybody can be anything they want. If you want to be poor, then that choice is yours. If you want to be rich, there is no place better than the US to find your dream. If you want to be middle-class, most people choose that route, but it's all up to the individual.

We are the most generous country in the world because we have the money to do so. We not only produce more than enough food for ourselves, but for many around the world as well. Now the same is happening with fuel thanks to fracking technology.

The idea that we can speak freely against the government and others is something many places don't allow. You are free to come or go as you like. Nobody is stopping you. Same with religion. Provided your religion is not a threat to the public, you can practice any religion you like, or none at all. If you don't want to participate in our major parties during election, you are free to join and vote for any other party you want without retaliation, even if it means supporting an anti-American party such as Socialism or Communism.

We have a Constitution that guarantees every citizen certain rights; rights such as being able to defend yourself and your family even if it means using deadly force. Rights such as not be subject to search and seizure by any government without going through the proper channels. Rights such as not being convicted of a crime unless there is compelling evidence against you.

Most of our people live better than any others around the globe. Even our so-called poor live in homes that are larger with more amenities than those of working Europeans. The ability for one to invest their money is also something people are trying to get in this country for. They can't do that in their own country. You can work, save money, and open up your own business if you like. The stock market, commodities market, the real estate market, are also investments that can gain you great wealth, but it comes with a sacrifice if you are willing to make it. If you are lazy and don't want to take major risks, there are multiple lottery games, casinos and horse races you can gamble your money on.

Many of us have modern conveniences even if not rich. You have cable or satellite stations that offer hundreds of channels. It's broadcasted in high definition. Many Americans have big screens in their home and the latest video games. I love our technology. I have an 80" television in my home. In extreme heat or cold, I start my car from my smart phone. I can do that from any state in the continental US. If you don't like what's on radio, you can get satellite radio instead. Many of our people are hooked up to this wonderful internet. Those that aren't are usually just not interested.

Now you can agree with me that this is the greatest country in the world, or you can dwell on the past which has it's dark moments like any other country. But growing pains is part of the process of becoming a great country. Show me one human being on this earth that never made a mistake and perhaps learned from it.

The idea that we can speak freely against the government and others is something many places don't allow. You are free to come or go as you like. Nobody is stopping you. Same with religion. Provided your religion is not a threat to the public, you can practice any religion you like, or none at all. If you don't want to participate in our major parties during election, you are free to join and vote for any other party you want without retaliation, even if it means supporting an anti-American party such as Socialism or Communism.

We have a Constitution that guarantees every citizen certain rights; rights such as being able to defend yourself and your family even if it means using deadly force. Rights such as not be subject to search and seizure by any government without going through the proper channels. Rights such as not being convicted of a crime unless there is compelling evidence against you.

Most of our people live better than any others around the globe. Even our so-called poor live in homes that are larger with more amenities than those of working Europeans. The ability for one to invest their money is also something people are trying to get in this country for. They can't do that in their own country. You can work, save money, and open up your own business if you like. The stock market, commodities market, the real estate market, are also investments that can gain you great wealth, but it comes with a sacrifice if you are willing to make it. If you are lazy and don't want to take major risks, there are multiple lottery games, casinos and horse races you can gamble your money on.

Many of us have modern conveniences even if not rich. You have cable or satellite stations that offer hundreds of channels. It's broadcasted in high definition. Many Americans have big screens in their home and the latest video games. I love our technology. I have an 80" television in my home. In extreme heat or cold, I start my car from my smart phone. I can do that from any state in the continental US. If you don't like what's on radio, you can get satellite radio instead. Many of our people are hooked up to this wonderful internet. Those that aren't are usually just not interested.

Now you can agree with me that this is the greatest country in the world, or you can dwell on the past which has it's dark moments like any other country. But growing pains is part of the process of becoming a great country. Show me one human being on this earth that never made a mistake and perhaps learned from it.

We can keep this country great as long as we continue to fight and defeat liberalism.

You need to travel more you have a huge misconception about the world sir. Dont get me wrong I love the US and I'll fight for it...but most Americans are ignorant about the fact that they are the best out there.
And the list of things you mentioned can easily be attained in most developed and other non developed countries.

I travel the world and I can assure you that the US apart from certain pockets looks like a third world country compared to some countries.

Food generally tampered with and is tasteless compared to many nations who dont allow certain chemicals and GMOs.

Health, we have one of the lowest life expectancy compared to other G20 nations, and many cant afford it or go bankrupt after one procedure that's free in other countries.

I agree Americans have so many toys, cars...but then again it's all debt....Americans have one of the worst debts, so does the country itself.

Most developed countries have bullet trains, better infrastructure than the US ( Japan. Germany, etc...)

And the worst now...is one guy is shaming and attacking everything and everyone that doesn't agree with him...it would never happen in other democratic countries.

You see, as a liberal, your mind works differently than normal people. Normal people will see the wall as a partial solution to a long going problem. They will see a wall as a country protecting themselves from invaders and drugs. They will see a wall that's no different than the doors of your home which you lock every evening and when you are away to keep intruders out. They will see the wall as common sense.

Yep, and the people of Hungary will vouch for that. But the wall being replaced now in CA has some sort of anti-climbing technology that they are talking about. I don't know what it is or how it works, but I trust all the experts on the subject more than I do people here that think it's just a simple wall that anybody can climb over like a kid trying to sneak into his own high school football field to watch his team play.

It may be an anti climbing wall but razor wire makes it even better.
