I don't know how much of a difference this would've made, but the boy in my opinion should've been removed from the school as soon as word got out about his mom. School most likely became the last thing on his mind anyway once he learned that he would never be seeing his mom again. He can return sometime later if it is safe enough for him to come back by then.
