where did anyone get that i was home schooling??? I asked for books for my stepson to read after school / on the weekends, etc

the (homeschoolers) in the thread title?

the redwall series is good....its a lot of books....9 or more...

comics would be nice..too...make it something the kid will enjoy...dont make reading a drudgry

Review: Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

I suggest science fiction because of the IDEAS integrated into the stories. Not all SF is thought provoking, in fact, most is not. But the stuff that is really worth reading can stick with the reader for years if not decades. I first read Citizen of the Galaxy more than 30 years ago and just reread it a few weeks ago. I would suggest it for grade school of high schools kids. Maybe 6th grade and up.

It is a fairly long book for its time. Most stuff from the 60s is only about 150 pages. But Heinlein crams a lot in a small space. One thing he gets across is psychology and cultural relativism. The protagonist is possibly an 8 yo at the start and the entire story may cover a 12 year period.

But in that time he encounters 4 different cultures. Heinlein cheats by having an anthropologist studying the second culture so a lot gets explained in the dialogue. Many people complain about this in Heinlein's stories but if you want kids to learn a lot in a short time what is wrong with that?

Lois McMaster Bujold has gotten just as many Hugo awards as Heinlein. But you need to read about 5 of her books to get the perspective that Heinlein puts into one. Of course her characters are more fleshed out, witty and interesting than Heinlein's. But it amounts to reading 1400 instead of 260 pages, FIVE TIMES as much. I am would also not be inclined to give Bujold's books to grade school kids. More like high school juniors.

It is as though in the 60s you had to read 10 books to get a chapters worth of good information and now you must read 20 to get two paragraphs worth. But selecting the books makes a HUGE difference.
