They're not routinely carried, but they're deployed when the situation requires. When you live in a relatively low gun problem country, cops don't routinely need a firearm. And of course, Yanks think there's a thug on the corner of every street armed to the teeth with firearms.

My son is a policeman and has never carried a gun. He doesnt want one because he doesnt need one.
