Nope//Reconstruction was NOT a mistake..it just didn't follow through with what it started. At the beginning there was a concerted effort to extend the franchise to the Blacks..to elect Black Legislators and to prevent the antebellum power structure from reforming. Politics intervened--and business. Everyone wanted cheap labor and the flight of freed slaves North was viewed with alarm. The Northern states wished to protect their jobs--the South needed the labor. The Federal govt. was persuaded to back off..and the white power structure in the South reformed...thus leading to Jim Crow.

We must never forget that no one really had any love for the Blacks..except philosophically; when it came to providing jobs and equal protection under the law--never mind social equality...almost all Americans...white Americans...balked.
