Google, Facebook and other tech giants to support Trump's $200 million STEM plan
While President Donald Trump’s hardline base attacks Google, Facebook and Twitter for supposedly censoring conservative voices, the president and major tech firms are embarking on a joint project to improve the nation’s education in science, technology, engineering and math.
Trump on Sept. 25 signed a memorandum that pledges to spend up to $200 million a year to expand access to “high-quality” STEM education, with a focus on computer science.
“The workplace is changing,” Trump said as he prepared to sign the memo. “We need to create new pathways for all our citizens to get the best jobs.
“Better STEM education also means higher-paying jobs for American workers and families. You get out of school you get great — really great jobs — high-paying jobs.”
According to the White House, “too many students lack access to high-quality STEM and computer science education.” Fewer than half of U.S. high schools offer computer programming and close to 40 percent don’t teach physics, the White House said. And there are divisions by gender, race and geography, the White House said.
“Far more can be done to improve participation in STEM and computer science education among women, minorities, and students in rural communities.
“For example, less than a quarter of students who took the Advanced Placement Computer Science A exam in 2016 were women, according to the College Board.”
The presidential memo directs Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to establish as a Department of Education priority “high-quality” STEM education with a “particular focus” on computer science. It sets as a “goal” the expenditure of $200 million a year in grants to support that priority, and further directs DeVos to “explore administrative actions” that would add to or increase emphasis on computer science in K-12 and post-secondary schooling.
The other key component of the planned STEM boost — partnership with major technology companies — is expected to be publicly revealed Sept. 26, when Trump adviser and daughter Ivanka Trump will join business chiefs to announce private-sector commitments, according to tech website Recode. Among the companies participating are Google, Facebook, Amazon, Salesforce and GM, Recode reported.
Ivanka Trump said the initiative aimed to ensure that every student in the country, including those in rural areas and inner cities, can be prepared for technology jobs...
The difference couldn't be more clear. Rahm Emanuel has done nothing but ensure that blacks continue to murder each other in records numbers in Chiraq. Jerry Brown has continued the Clinton tradition of throwing black people into jail (until ordered to let some go by the courts). Etc.
Meanwhile, Trump is actually trying to educate these gangbangers and get them jobs.
