I live about eight miles from the city where I was born. It is a liberal city that always votes democrat. The city is comprised mostly of elderly Baby Boomers. I just got notification that my supplemental health insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield, is pulling out of the city and surrounding area. That means my wife and I will have to shop around for another insurance carrier that will likely not provide the same coverage and benefits we were currently getting.

The city has a hospital that was recently fined 2 million dollars for poor handling and record keeping of controlled substances—Fentanyl. The city’s liberal media functions as public relations for the status quo, so information about why Blue Cross is leaving will never be made public.

I’m wondering how common this is.

We get those types of "notifications" every now and again when the Valley Health is at loggerheads with BC & BS....They always work it out.

No one is going to work this out. It is an economic decision and it is final.

IDK. Several years ago they completely dropped our local hospital as a provider, just not the policy holders. After it went from being a non-profit to being sold to a for-profit, the infection rates and bounce back rates skyrocketed. Eventually they got it sorted out, but for a few years, if you were insured with them and need surgery, you couldn't go there and have insurance cover it in network.

Sounds like you're on a Medicare Advantage plan instead of a Medicare supplement as Anthem Blue cross has terminated all their plans in New Hampshire and Vermont but not their supplements.

Because we lost our insurance, my wife wife was able to get me dental coverage on her work plan. We are likely to get AARP which is close to what we had but did not offer dental coverage.

Would be better if you didn't need health insurance and you had a service free at the point of delivery. It'd be cheaper.

Cheaper for who? Who is paying for this "free" service?

I didn't say "free". I said "free at the point of delivery"

Who'll pay? The tax payer, just like the tax payer pays now.

"In 2023/24, the Department for Health and Social Care spent £188.5 billion."

That's $248.12 billion dollars.

The UK has a population of 69 million people. That's $3,595 per person

The US federal government spends $1.9 trillion on healthcare.

"The federal government spent $1.9 trillion on health care programs and services in fiscal year (FY) 2024, 27% of all federal outlays in that year, and collectively the largest category of federal spending."

The US population is 340 million people. That's $5,588 per person.

So the US federal govt spend way more on healthcare than the UK govt does. The UK govt should spend more, but because the Conservatives were in power for 14 years they've reduce the spending. At one time the UK was spending about the same person when the NHS was actually really good (and before they started charging foreigners for healthcare).

The US federal government only spends half of healthcare spending in the US.
