Was LBJ a racist?
Probably as racist as anyone else raise in West Texas in 1910
Difference was that while he represented Texas' racist views while a Senator, he broke away from his base once he became President. LBJ understood the seriousness of the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960s and that he stood at a unique point in history. He not only signed the Civil Rights legislation, but worked tirelessly to get the needed votes
It cost his party the south but LBJ did what he thought was right not what was in the best interests of his party politically
