Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has come out publicly this morning, saying he is a “gay man”.

“I am a gay man, it’s not a secret, but not something that everyone would necessarily know but isn’t something I’ve spoken publicly about before,” he told Miriam O’Callaghan on RTÉ Radio.

“It’s not something that defines me,” he said. “I’m not a half-indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter. It’s just part of who I am, it doesn’t define me, it is part of my character I suppose”.

Minister Varadkar's comments came as members of the marriage equality campaign launched their crowd-funding effort #ShareTheLove in PantiBar in Dublin this afternoon.

A referendum on the issue will be held in May.

LGBT rights campaigners at the launch welcomed the Minister's announcement:

When I was young, my father said,
"Son, I've got something to say."
And what he told me I'll never forget until my dying day.

[Chorus 1:]
He said, "Son, you'll be a bachelor boy
And that's the way to stay.
Son, you'll be a bachelor boy until your dying day."

When I was sixteen I fell in love
With a girl as sweet as can be.
But I remembered just in time what my daddy said to me.

[Chorus 1]

As time goes by, I probably will meet a girl and fall in love.
Then, I'll get married, have A-wife and A-child
And they'll be my turtle dove.

[Chorus 2:]
But until then, I'll be a bachelor boy
and that's the way I'll stay-yay-yay,
Happy to be a bachelor boy until my dying day.
Yeah, I'll be a bachelor boy
and that's the way I'll stay-yay-yay,
Happy to be a bachelor boy until my dying day.

As Leo said he is not in a relationship, I have a brilliant idea for a reality show;

LET’S FIND LEO A LOVER!

It would be ‘Big Brother’ meets ‘The Bachelor’.

Leo would be introduced to potentially suitable partner, spend a week living together and we could all watch to see how they get on. I think the program would be a winner!
